Excerpt from Essays on Secondary Education The Greek poet says that the streams of joy and trouble flow in different ways, and this is as true of day schools as it was of ancient rulers. There are many different kinds of schools Which fall under the general head of day schools, and their advantages and difficulties are not in all cases the same. There are, for instance, the Public Secondary Schools, whether old endowed foundations or more recently established by Town and County Councils; there are Proprietary Schools, such as have been founded by public companies or other bodies; and there are Private Schools. All these schools belong to the sphere of secondary education. Then, again, there are the Higher Grade Board Schools, which in some large towns must certainly be considered as giving instruction beyond elementary standards and lastly, there are the Technical Schools. Excerpt from Debateable Claims: Essays on Secondary Education Little book entitled Some Observations of 4 Foster Parent, which I published last June, has had the effect of bringing me into communication with a large number of my professional brethren, and other persons interested in educational questions. The favourable welcome accorded to that book by the Press, and the kindly nature of the letters which I have received, encourage me to hope that a more elaborate review of the matters touched upon may not be without its value, at a time when we are threatened with revolution rather than organization in our schools. Not being at the present moment the head master of a grammar school, nor holding any official position, I am at liberty to speak out, no interests but my own being endangered by the process. Excerpt from Co-Education: A Series of Essays There seems to be no doubt that the plan of edu cating boys and girls together is taking a steadily increasing hold on our English nation. Whereas five and-twenty years ago the idea was scarcely mentioned, except for elementary schools in country districts, or if mentioned only derided, it is now regarded in many quarters as not only possible but even desir able The only questions asked are: How long should co-education continue? And How far is it practicable? This little book is the outcome of an expedition taken by the editor in 1901, to various parts of Hants, Derbyshire and Lancashire, in order to find out what was being done for the advance of co-education in secondary schools. It is the result of the discovery that, whilst experiments of very varying degrees of thoroughness are being tried, and spreading in all directions among various classes, these experiments are often being carried on through private enterprise, in almost total ignorance of the work of others. Excerpt from The Century and the School, and Other Educational Essays The essays brought together in this volume were selected, by a group of his intimate asso ciates, from the manuscripts of Superintend ent F. Louis Soldan, after his death. They felt that the spirit which had exerted so strong an in uence upon public education might be kept alive in the minds and hearts of teachers through its expression in the literary appeals it had made while in the full force of its activity. Excerpt from Changes Needed in American Secondary Education A survey of the programmes of the existing American secondary schools - public, private, and endowed - would show that as a rule they pay little attention to the training of the senses, and provide small opportunities for acquiring any skill of eye, ear, or hand, or any acquaintance with the accurate recording and cautious reason ing which modern science prescribes. To make, or read, a complete survey of these programmes would be a dull and heavy task; but the demonstration needed for the purpose of the present essay can be readily given by analyzing the programmes of a few typical schools and academies. Such an analysis of the programmes and regulations of twelve different schools and one group of kindred schools is given in the Appendix, the general result being that the secondary schools are giving not more than from one tenth to one sixth of their force to observational, sense-training subjects. Any school superintendent, teacher, or committeeman can verify the results of this analysis in any secondary schools with which he is acquainted. Excerpt from Education: An Essay and Other Selections There is no better brief for a broad, human education than that presented in the writ1ng Of ediesoetour best American apostle of culture, he notes with precision the qualities which are the measure of a truly cultivatedtfiant ivith high critical power, he describes the futility and the narrowness of much that goes under theguise of human training In The. Schools, and ably de fends the larger cause of spiritual development, despite _the failures to achieve it in the class room. When Sharp competition forces us to a serious consideration of aschool training for bread winning, it is well to be told that the glorified word efficiency means spiritual efficiency as much as economic competency. Excerpt from Schools at Home and Abroad These essays and addresses on educational topics have been prepared at various times, and for varying audiences. Several of them were prepared for gatherings of. Primary teachers, others for gatherings of parents and persons interested in education. Some repetition and apparent diversity seem almost inevitable in a collection of essays written under these circumstances. Yet the writer thinks that, beneath this repetition and diversity, the essential unity of attitude, so to speak, is preserved. There will be noticed too in the text local references, but the reader will see that the argument demands such local point, and he will be able to vary the reference to suit the environment. The purpose of the writer is not an ambitious one. He makes no claim to originality in any respect. His aim throughout has been to make available to teachers and others interested in education, the valuable mass of material that, in the form of educational statistics and reports, has been collected both by Government offices and by private individuals. Were a list of the many writers consulted added, it would seem pedantic; and, as the author claims no originality for himself, it is hoped that the omission of such a list will be excused.
