Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882) was the most influential American writer of the nineteenth century. Poets such as Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, and Wallace Stevens descend from Emerson, as do thinkers such as John Dewey and William James. This volume of critical interpretations focuses on Emerson's Essays: First Series (1841) and Essays: Second Series (1844), which encompass some of his most important works-"History," "Self-Reliance," "Circles," "The Poet," and "Experience" among others. These essays exemplify Emerson's distinctively rich prose and his radical affirmation of the strength of the individual. The analyses and appreciations collected here place Emerson's essays in the context of literary and intellectual history, grapple with the implications of his epigrams and tropes, and link his shifts of perspective and tone to the changes in Emerson's life. Together they illuminate the complexity and scope of the seminal works of America's most influential writer and thinker. Book jacket.

This volume consists of an introduction and two groups of essays by Paul M. Postal, each with a connecting theme. The first, positive group of papers, contains five previously unpublished studies of English syntax. These include a long study of so-called "locative inversion," two investigations related to raising to non-subject status, an argument for the existence of a hitherto ignored nominal grammatical category and a study of vulgar negative polarity items. Each investigation of specific English details is argued to have significant theoretical consequences. The second, negative group of papers, contains seven essays each of which seeks to show that aspects of contemporary linguistic activity are in part contaminated by elements of what is called "junk linguistics." Postal uses the term to denote work which advances proposals, puts forward claims and asserts deep results which, he argues, can only be accepted by ignoring serious standards of inquiry and scholarship. Postal claims that much of this work is nonetheless currently considered not only serious but prestigious reveals the problem to exist at the core of the field, not its periphery. These chapters include documentation of "junk linguistic" aspects in National Science Foundation refereeing, work on the foundations of linguistics, and even in widespread terminological usages. The final chapter briefly lists personal suggestions for dealing with this problem.

In 2016 Current Topics in Developmental Biology (CTDB) will celebrate its 50th or "golden anniversary. To commemorate the founding of CTDB by Aron Moscona (1921-2009) and Alberto Monroy (1913-1986) in 1966, a two-volume set of CTDB (volumes 116 and 117), entitled Essays on Development, will be published by Academic Press/Elsevier in early 2016. The volumes are edited by Paul M. Wassarman, series editor of CTDB, and include contributions from dozens of outstanding developmental biologists from around the world. This thorough text provides a complete overview of the drive in Lacanian psychoanalysis. Divided into four key areas, the book considers clinical, theoretical, historical, and cultural aspects of the drive, with editorial headnotes throughout. The introduction to the collection provides a comprehensive overview of the theory and history of the drive as a concept and is followed by discussion of clinical cases. Critical Essays on the Drive then assesses theoretical aspects, with chapters by world-leading Lacanian scholars. The final parts of the book explore the history of drive theory and its impact on art and culture, debunking the notion that the drive is a dormant or defunct concept and considering its applications by artists, academics, and cultural theorists. Critical Essays on the Drive will be essential reading for psychoanalysts, psychologists, psychotherapists, and psychiatrists in practice and in training. It will also be of great interest to academics and scholars of psychoanalytic and Lacanian theory, critical theory, and cultural theory.
