But it also tackles the ways in which private individuals are affected by 'Beauty', 'Deformity', 'Envy', 'Riches' and desire for 'Revenge'. Like the French essayist, Michel de Montaigne, Bacon explores each topic from several different angles rather than defending a single idea.
