Spain, 1936: NBC Radio, New York, sends two young reporters, Tom Wells and Meg Austin, to Madrid where Franco and his revolutionary fascist generals have plunged the country into a ruthless civil conflict. The lovers experience the ambiguities, dangers and drama of war-time Spain. They witness the heartbreaking scenes of civilian-soldiers armed with ancient weapons and little ammunition fighting experienced, well-supplied combat troops. Bombs fall on civilian neighborhoods dropped by Hitlers and Mussolinis bombers. The fascists support Franco, the Russian Communists the Republic, while the western democracies stand idly by. Both Meg and Tom become enmeshed in the political realities of the war. They quarrel over Stalins acts of terror. Tom believes Stalins methods are necessary to defeat fascism. Meg sharply disagrees. She is bewildered by Toms absolute certainty. Can she trust him? Will their affair survive?

This 2005 book explores the ideas and culture surrounding the cataclysmic civil war that engulfed Spain from 1936 to 1939. It features specially commissioned articles from leading historians in Spain, Britain and the US which examine the complex interaction of national and local factors, contributing to the shape and course of the war. They argue that the 'splintering of Spain' resulted from the myriad cultural cleavages of society in the 1930s that are investigated here at both local and national levels. Thus, this book tends to see the civil war less as a single great conflict between two easily identifiable sets of ideas, social classes or ways of life than historians have previously done. The Spanish tragedy, at the level of everyday life, was shaped by many tensions, both those that were formally political and those that were to do with people's perceptions and understanding of the society around them.

Based on extensive archival research and containing rare and previously unpublished photos, this book provides the most detailed reconstruction ever of one of the most important events in Spanish theatrical history.Winner of the 2019-20 AHGBI-Spanish Embassy Publication Prize On 18 June 1933, one of the most important events in Spanish theatrical history took place before an audience of 3,000 spectators in the ruins of the Roman Theatre in Mérida. Translated into Spanish by philosopher Miguel de Unamuno, staged by the renowned Xirgu-Borràs Company and funded by the government, the performance of Seneca''s Medea was a triumph of republican culture and widely hailed for its new dramatic and scenic languages. This book provides the most detailed reconstruction of this pivotal production to date, setting it in context and analysing its origin and legacy. Early twentieth-century intellectuals considered Seneca, ''the philosopher from Córdoba'', the epitome of Spanishness and the first in an illustrious line of playwrights stretching from Spain''s Roman Antiquity to its Silver Age. His play was seen as the ideal vehicle to showcase the Second Spanish Republic''s cultural, social and educational agenda but provoked a furious backlash from opponents to the government''s progressive programme. The book shows how the performance became a cultural ritual which stood at the centre of critical discussions on national identity, politics, secularism, women''s rights and new European aesthetics of theatre-making. Based on extensive archival research and containing rare and previously unpublished photos, it will be of interest to theatre historians, scholars of Classical Reception and historians of the Second Spanish Republic.aywrights stretching from Spain''s Roman Antiquity to its Silver Age. Patrician de la Cruz, Professor of English at Malaga University, writes: ‘The greatest thing about this book is the language itself, the style and ease with which the words flow off the pages. Ivar Watson demonstrates his literary skills by weaving an authentic but yet very entertaining picture of real Spain and real people, blending history and local colour effortlessly with the great skill of the story writer. He manages to penetrate beneath the surface and digs deep into the heart of his characters.’ With its originality of form and its evocation of the real Spain, as opposed to the autobiographical superficiality of so many contemporary accounts, Glimpses of Deep Spain rivals the best books on Spain, from Borrow’s The Bible in Spain to today.
