Embedded Entrepreneurship examines the importance of cultural meaning in the creation and utilization of economic value. Based on case-studies from Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia, the authors demonstrate that micro-scale entrepreneurship is intertwined with prevailing conceptions, moralities and habituations in the entrepreneurs’ social milieu. More specifically, the volume argues that meaning-making is integral to economic opportunity; that economic actors’ market agency is shaped by cultural experiences; that entrepreneurs' prototypical “individualism” is socially contingent; and that cultural meanings channel economic value among economic and social domains. Addressing core questions about “embedding”, the authors suggest theoretical convergences between economic anthropology and economic sociology. Jacobsen, Kristianne Ervik, Anette Fagertun, Lars Gjelstad, Nils Hidle, Anja Lillegraven, Solgunn Olsen and Ingvild Solvang.

'. . . I consider the book a good general reference on SME conditions in the Asia-Pacific region. . .' - Aegean Leung, ASEAN Economic Bulletin The 1997 financial and economic crisis in East Asia provided the catalyst for an important reappraisal of the Small and Medium sized Enterprise (SME) sector across the region. In this timely book, a distinguished group of contributors discusses the role of SMEs in the globalisation of the East Asian economies, and assess how the financial crisis has impacted on them. They focus on a number of key aspects of SMEs in the region, including: * financing issues * the role of entrepreneurship * the diffusion of technology in the region * Chinese small businesses * SME requirements for information technology * the opportunities afforded by electronic commerce * regional labour markets and their impact on SMEs.

The Entrepreneurial Rise in Southeast Asia examines the start-up scene environments in Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia. The contributors to this volume explore government strategies to support start-up communities, local challenges, and unique strengths of each country. They answer key questions framing policy and strategic decision-making at the firm, industry, national, and regional levels, such as: How does technological advance occur, and what are the process and institutions involved? Which cultural characteristics serve to promote or impede innovation? And, in what ways is wealth distributed or concentrated?
