Excerpt from Medieval Military Architecture in England, Vol. 1 The Registrum Honoris de Richmond, a very curious Custumary, specifies the precise part in that castle that each tenant was to defend. At Belvoir, Staunton tower, at Berkeley, Thorpe's tower, are so called because families of those names were responsible for them, and at Dover, Magminot and a score of other towers still bear the names of the chief tenants of that important lordship, and thus preserve the memory of a tenure the substance of which has long been abolished. The connexion between the military tenant and his lord was intimate, and much imbued with the ancient Teutonic equal ity and independence. The lord held his aula for his own safety and that of his tenants; their mutual support gave power to the one and security to the others; no man was degraded by such a tenure. The most powerful barons were almost always also tenants holding fiefs under other lords, often far their inferiors in rank and power. Excerpt from Lectures on the Rise and Development of Medieval Architecture, Vol. 1 of 2 The Lectures are naturally somewhat disconnected and having been written both at various times and for audiences often changing, may be found in some in stances to repeat the same facts and ideas, for which, as well as for too great a prolixity of style, I beg to apologise. They were written with much zeal; and, thanks to my staff, and to my pupils, my sons, and others, they were magnificently and profusely illustrated; more so, perhaps, than any such Lectures had ever been before. Excerpt from The Medieval Church Architecture of England But the question of names is of secondary importance. The primary consideration is whether such a fundamental difference as I affirm really exists between the pointed architecture of the Ile de France and all other pointed styles. The question can be determined only by a systematic examination and comparison such as I have attempted in this book. Excerpt from Westminster Cathedral and Its Architect, Vol. 2 of 2 Charles Bentley, born in 1805, seems to have been intended for the law, and spent part of his earliest manhood in the offices of two local solicitors. The idea Of qualifying for this profession was, however, early abandoned, and, becoming a burgess of his town, we find him embarked on the more immediately profitable vocation of a wine-merchant. Whether he inherited the business, or whether it was founded and built up by his own energy and enterprise the writer does not know; but it is certain that, prospering sufficiently to settle in life while yet very young, he married Ann Bacchus, a year his senior, some time in 1826.
