An increasing number of multilingual students, often with a migration background, are attending elementary schools in Germany these days. Also on the rise is the number of schools offering a bilingual program, where content subjects such as science and mathematics are taught in a foreign language. This book explores minority and majority language students' German and English reading and writing skills in elementary schools which offer either regular English-as-subject lessons or bilingual programs with varying degrees of English intensity. The focus is on effects of foreign language input intensity with respect to students' language background, gender, cognitive abilities, and socio-economic background. This book also provides recommendations for English reading and writing activities in the elementary school classroom.

Essay from the year 2008 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Other, grade: 1,3, University of Trier, language: English, abstract: At German elementary schools a development in teaching focus in the last years should actually have taken place: there has officially been a partly shift from traditional subjects, such as mathematics to modern languages, such as English or French. Fifteen years ago, however, foreign languages were rarely taught at German elementary schools, and if they were given room in the children’s timetable, they played only a subordinate part in it. On the contrary, foreign languages are included in the timetable today, but many schools decided to teach them integrated into the other subjects. Honestly speaking, this seems to be a really good solution, but during a work experience at a German elementary school, I discovered that none of the three or four teachers of one class feels responsible for carrying out the task. Talking to the responsible teachers, they admitted being aware of this deplorable situation but do not want to focus more on languages needing the time to teach the basics of the other subjects. I definitely cannot approve of this because there is an abundance of aspects why foreign language teaching should start at the latest at elementary school and should also be very intense to secure the best development of the child as possible, which can be proven by answering opposition, explaining the main reasons, naming the positive results, and giving examples.

Essay from the year 2010 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,3, University of Trier, language: English, abstract: “We need to change our education system” – utterances such as this one are commonly heard. In German elementary schools a development in teaching focus in the last few years is said to have actually taken place: officially, there has been a small shift from traditional subjects, such as mathematics, on modern languages, such as English or French. Fifteen years ago, however, foreign languages were rarely taught at German elementary schools, and if they were given room in the children’s timetable, they played only a subordinate role. On the contrary, foreign languages are included in the timetable today, but many schools decided to teach them integrated into the other subjects, which makes no teacher feel especially responsible for carrying out the task – most teachers seem to be aware of this deplorable situation but do not want to focus more on languages, needing the time to teach the basics of the other subjects. This cannot be tolerated and there are abundant aspects to why foreign language teaching should start at the latest at elementary school level.

This book is the first comprehensive investigation of interlanguage pragmatic issues in a primary school context that is based on both primary school teachers’ statements on their own teaching realities, views and preferences, and a thorough investigation of materials used by teachers and recommended by teacher educators in the state the primary schools are located in. It offers a contrastive analysis of primary school learners acquiring English in a typical English as a foreign language school context and their age peers in the same state that are exposed to English in a school immersion context. This book will be of interest to scholars, researchers, educators in higher education that focus on English language teaching, second language acquisition and applied linguistics. It is also intended for students who are planning to become primary school teachers of English as a foreign language.
