Excerpt from England, Egypt, and the Sudan The long period of external peace which succeeded to the last conquest was mainly due to the neglect of Egypt by the great Powers - engaged during the sixteenth and seven teenth centuries in wars of religion, wars of colonial rivalry, and wars of dynastic dispute; while the gradual decline in the strength and menace of her Ottoman suzerain was already beginning to draw the jealous and anxious attention of the European States to a point farther to the East. Otherwise, the growing weakness of Turkey and the practical subordina tion of her nominal viceroys to the Mameluke Beys who governed the various Egyptian provinces, collected the taxes, commanded the militia, and merely paid tribute to the Pasha, would doubtless have earlier merited an attempt from one or other of the great Powers to wrest this rich and historic domain of the Ottoman from his gradually failing hands. Late in the eighteenth century the time arrived. The greatest and greediest of all the conquerors of the world, looking eastward for a new empire, and for a basis of attack upon the eastern dominion of his most formidable foe, cast the eye of desire upon Egypt, and there and then began the rivalry for its possession, or, failing possession, for paramount influence therein, which has arrayed France and England against each other ever since. Excerpt from The Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, Vol. 1 of 2: Geographical, Descriptive, and Historical The chapters have been compiled by various officers in the Sudan Administration; but the main work of editing and revision has fallen on lieut.-colonel Count Gleichen (the Editor), who, from the somewhat indiscriminate mass of. Reports, documents and books at his disposal, has evolved a compendium which cannot fail to be of great use and value to the officers and officials of the Sudan Government. I even venture to hope that such of the general public as may be interested in this vast country, its history, and its future, will find in the following pages a useful work of reference until a more complete and comprehensive work is forthcoming. Excerpt from Savage Sudan: Its Wild Tribes, Big-Game and Bird-Life The anglo-egyptian Sudan has been under British administration upwards of twenty years; yet during that period there has lacked any attempt to describe our great Dependency (in popular sense) from the standpoint of the hunter-naturalist. Sir Samuel Baker's classic works of sixty years ago remain our only guides - and Baker professed no technical knowledge as a naturalist. Excerpt from The Egyptian Sudan The Sudan has also awakened a deep and in creasing missionary interest. The sorrows and sufferings which the slave trade visited upon the country, the more recent desolation caused by a decade and a half of Mahdi rule, the strange and whole-hearted devotion of the Sudanese races to religious, though false, ideals, the martyrdom of Gordon, Isaiah's realistic and hopeful prophecy concerning this part of Africa, and finally the present destitution of the land and the largeness of the present missionary opportunity - unite in their appeal to the sympathy and missionary in terest of Christendom. Excerpt from Five Years in the Sudan IN the year 1885 Gordon fell at Khartoum, and the Sudan passed into the hands of the Mahdi. In 1898, thirteen years later, the combined forces of England and Egypt met and defeated the hosts of the Khalifa at Omdurman. The regeneration of the Sudan may be dated from that year, though it was more than twelve months later that the Khalifa himself, making a desperate effort to regain his fallen power, died on the field of battle, and combined resistance on the part of the Sudanese ceased. Twelve years have therefore elapsed since the English entered the country: it is of the earlier part of this time that I have written.
