This book offers a practical, application-oriented introduction to computational fluid dynamics (CFD), with a focus on the concepts and principles encountered when using CFD in industry. Presuming no more knowledge than college-level understanding of the core subjects, the book puts together all the necessary topics to give the reader a comprehensive introduction to CFD. It includes discussion of the derivation of equations, grid generation and solution algorithms for compressible, incompressible and hypersonic flows. The final two chapters of the book are intended for the more advanced user. In the penultimate chapter, the special difficulties that arise while solving practical problems are addressed. Distinction is made between complications arising out of geometrical complexity and those arising out of the complexity of the physics (and chemistry) of the problem. The last chapter contains a brief discussion of what can be considered as the Holy Grail of CFD, namely, finding the optimal design of a fluid flow component. A number of problems are given at the end of each chapter to reinforce the concepts and ideas discussed in that chapter. CFD has come of age and is widely used in industry as well as in academia as an analytical tool to investigate a wide range of fluid flow problems. This book is written for two groups: for those students who are encountering CFD for the first time in the form of a taught lecture course, and for those practising engineers and scientists who are already using CFD as an analysis tool in their professions but would like to deepen and broaden their understanding of the subject.

This book systematically introduces engineering fluid mechanics in a simple and understandable way, focusing on the basic concepts, principles and methods. Engineering fluid mechanics is necessary for professionals and students in fields such as civil, environmental, mechanical, and petroleum engineering. Unlike most of the current textbooks and monographs, which are too complicated and include huge numbers of math formulas and equations, this book introduces essential concepts and flow rules in a clear and elementary way that can be used in further research. In addition, it provides numerous useful tables and diagrams that can be quickly and directly checked for industry applications. Furthermore, it highlights the connection between free flow and porous flow, which can aid advanced interdisciplinary research such as nanotech and environmental science. Last but not least, each chapter presents a variety of problems to offer readers a better understanding about the principles and applications of fluid mechanics.

Computational fluid dynamics, CFD, has become an indispensable tool for many engineers. This book gives an introduction to CFD simulations of turbulence, mixing, reaction, combustion and multiphase flows. The emphasis on understanding the physics of these flows helps the engineer to select appropriate models to obtain reliable simulations. Besides presenting the equations involved, the basics and limitations of the models are explained and discussed. The book combined with tutorials, project and power-point lecture notes (all available for download) forms a complete course. The reader is given hands-on experience of drawing, meshing and simulation. The tutorials cover flow and reactions inside a porous catalyst, combustion in turbulent non-premixed flow, and multiphase simulation of evaporation spray respectively. The project deals with design of an industrial-scale selective catalytic reduction process and allows the reader to explore various design improvements and apply best practice guidelines in the CFD simulations.

Covers theoretical concepts in offshore mechanics with consideration to new applications, including offshore wind farms, ocean energy devices, aquaculture, floating bridges, and submerged tunnels This comprehensive book covers important aspects of the required analysis and design of offshore structures and systems and the fundamental background material for offshore engineering. Whereas most of the books currently available in the field use traditional oil, gas, and ship industry examples in order to explain the fundamentals in offshore mechanics, this book uses more recent applications, including recent fixed-bottom and floating offshore platforms, ocean energy structures and systems such as wind turbines, wave energy converters, tidal turbines and hybrid marine platforms. Offshore Mechanics covers traditional and more recent methodologies used in offshore structure modelling (including SPH and hydroelasticity models). It also examines numerical techniques, including computational fluid dynamics and finite element method. Additionally, the book features easy-to-understand exercises and examples. Provides a comprehensive treatment for the case of recent applications in offshore mechanics for researchers and engineers Presents the subject of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and finite element methods (FEM) along with the high fidelity numerical analysis of recent applications in offshore mechanics Offers insight into the philosophy and power of numerical simulations and an understanding of the mathematical nature of the fluid and structural dynamics with focus on offshore mechanic applications Offshore Mechanics: Structural and Fluid Dynamics for Recent Applications is an important book for graduate and senior undergraduate students in offshore engineering and for offshore engineers and researchers in the offshore industry.

An introduction to CFD fundamentals and using commercial CFD software to solve engineering problems, designed for the wide variety of engineering students new to CFD, and for practicing engineers learning CFD for the first time. Combining an appropriate level of mathematical background, worked examples, computer screen shots, and step by step processes, this book walks the reader through modeling and computing, as well as interpreting CFD results. The first book in the field aimed at CFD users rather than developers. New to this edition: A more comprehensive coverage of CFD techniques including discretisation via finite element and spectral element as well as finite difference and finite volume methods and multigrid method. Coverage of different approaches to CFD grid generation in order to closely match how CFD meshing is being used in industry. Additional coverage of high-pressure fluid dynamics and meshless approach to provide a broader overview of the application areas where CFD can be used. 20% new content .

This book reports on advanced theories and methods aimed at characterizing the dynamics of non-ideal compressible fluids. A special emphasis is given to research fostering the use of non-ideal compressible fluids for propulsion and power engineering. Both numerical and experimental studies, as well as simulations, are described in the book, which is based on selected contributions and keynote lectures presented at the 2nd International Seminar on Non-Ideal Compressible-Fluid Dynamics for Propulsion & Power. Held on October 4-5 in Bochum, Germany, the seminar aimed at fostering collaborations between academics and professionals. The two perspectives have been gathered together in this book, which offers a timely guide to advanced fundamentals, innovative methods and current applications of non-ideal compressible fluids to developing turbomachines, and for propulsion and power generation.

Engineering Fluid Mechanics guides students from theory to application, emphasizing critical thinking, problem solving, estimation, and other vital engineering skills. Clear, accessible writing puts the focus on essential concepts, while abundant illustrations, charts, diagrams, and examples illustrate complex topics and highlight the physical reality of fluid dynamics applications. Over 1,000 chapter problems provide the “deliberate practice”—with feedback—that leads to material mastery, and discussion of real-world applications provides a frame of reference that enhances student comprehension. The study of fluid mechanics pulls from chemistry, physics, statics, and calculus to describe the behavior of liquid matter; as a strong foundation in these concepts is essential across a variety of engineering fields, this text likewise pulls from civil engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, and more to provide a broadly relevant, immediately practicable knowledge base. Written by a team of educators who are also practicing engineers, this book merges effective pedagogy with professional perspective to help today’s students become tomorrow’s skillful engineers.
