No other book on teaching has excited me as much as this one. It should be the core text for prospective teachers in any field' -- Jonathan Potter, English and Drama Teacher Camden Hills Regional High School, Rockport, ME 'VanDeWeghe presents powerful instructional practices to help students use both their hearts and their minds in learning' -- Louann Reid, Professor Colorado State University To generate truly compelling learning experiences and increase retention of new information, educators need the knowledge and tools to engage students from both a neurological and humanistic perspective. Richard VanDeWeghe provides an inside look at what happens in students' minds and hearts when they are engaged and "in the groove." Based on Mihaly Csikszentmihaly's idea of "flow"--a state of intrinsic control, curiosity, interest, and inquiry that is the ultimate experiential goal for learning--this book provides holistic strategies for encouraging students to become motivated, engaged learners. Teachers will find: - Information on brain function and memory pathways - Spiritual and emotional principles of the heart that influence learning - Strategies for guiding open-ended discussions, quality questioning, and teacher modeling - Immediate, practical applications for language arts, science, maths, and social studies - Vignettes illustrating effective teacher dialogue and classroom involvement Engaged Learning is a clear, concise, and elegant resource that helps teachers understand what it means to be a highly motivated learner.

From EL Education comes a proven approach to student assessment Leaders of Their Own Learning offers a new way of thinking about assessment based on the celebrated work of EL Education schools across the country. Student-Engaged Assessment is not a single practice but an approach to teaching and learning that equips and compels students to understand goals for their learning and growth, track their progress toward those goals, and take responsibility for reaching them. This requires a set of interrelated strategies and structures and a whole-school culture in which students are given the respect and responsibility to be meaningfully engaged in their own learning. Includes everything teachers and school leaders need to implement a successful Student-Engaged Assessment system in their schools Outlines the practices that will engage students in making academic progress, improve achievement, and involve families and communities in the life of the school Describes each of the book's eight key practices, gives advice on how to begin, and explains what teachers and school leaders need to put into practice in their own classrooms Ron Berger is Chief Program Officer for EL Education and a former public school teacher Leaders of Their Own Learning shows educators how to ignite the capacity of students to take responsibility for their own learning, meet Common Core and state standards, and reach higher levels of achievement. Gerry Stahl Drexel University, Philadelphia, USA The theme of engaged learning with emerging technology is a timely and important one. This book proclaims the global relevance of the topic and sharpens its focus. I would like to open the book by sketching some of the historical context and dimensions of application, before the chapter authors provide the substance. Engagement with the world - To be human is to be engaged with other people in the world. Yet, there has been a dominant strain of thought, at least in the West, that directs attention primarily to the isolated individual as naked mind. From classical Greece to modern times, engagement in the daily activities of human existence has been denigrated. Plato (340 BC/1941) banished worldly engagement to a realm of shadows, removed from the bright light of ideas, and Descartes (1633/1999) even divorced our minds from our own bodies. It can be suggested that this is a particularly Western tendency, supportive of the emphasis on the individual agent in Christianity and capitalism. But the view of people as originally unengaged has spread around the globe to the point where it is now necessary everywhere to take steps to reinstate engagement through explicit efforts. Perhaps the most systematic effort to rethink the nature of human being in terms of engagement in the world was Heidegger’s (1927/1996). He argued that human existence takes place through our concern with other people and things that are meaningful to us.

This book offers faculty practical strategies to engage students that are research-grounded and endorsed by students themselves. Through student stories, a signature feature of this book, readers will discover why professor actions result in changed attitudes, stronger connections to others and the course material, and increased learning.Structured to cover the key moments and opportunities to increase student engagement, Christine Harrington covers the all-important first day of class where first impressions can determine students’ attitudes for the duration of the course, through to insights for rethinking assignments and enlivening teaching strategies, to ways of providing feedback that build students’ confidence and spur them to greater immersion in their studies, providing the underlying rationale for the strategies she presents. The student narratives not only validate these practices, offering their perspectives as learners, but constitute a trove of ideas and practices that readers will be inspired to adapt for their particular needs.Conscious of the changing demographics of today’s undergraduate and graduate students – racially more diverse, older, and many employed – Harrington highlights the need to engage all students and shares numerous strategies on how to do so. While many of the ideas presented were used by faculty teaching face to face classes, a number were developed by faculty teaching online, and the majority can be adapted to virtually any teaching environment. Based on student-centered active learning principles, structured to allow readers to quickly identify practices that they may need in particular instances or to infuse in a course as a whole, and presented without jargon, this book is a springboard for all faculty looking for ideas that will engage their students at any level and in any course.

Nearly a third of all college students are enrolled in at least one online course, and that number continues to grow. Meeting students where they are means bringing student services and supports to online learners by creating innovative ways to carry out traditional student affairs functions. This book shares best practices, case studies, examples, experiences, and ideas for supporting online learners through their college experience. The first section focuses on preparing for the everchanging higher education landscape and situating student affairs in the 21st century. The authors address how to support learners taking hybrid and fully online courses within virtual learning environments and how to educate and support 21st-century students. The second section focuses on the paradigm shift needed to bring traditional student affairs work to the online environment. The authors address how individual functional areas within student affairs can provide services and supports to students who take their courses 100% online and to traditional on-campus students who take online courses. The third and final section explores leveraging technology to advance the work of student affairs for online learners. Tools discussed include learning management systems, virtual conferencing systems, online integrative cocurricular programming, digital badging, and virtual learning communities.
