The word fiqh literally denotes understanding, though as a term, it has been employed since the late eighth/fourteenth and early ninth/fifteenth centuries in the sense of understanding of the law in the sense of stating the norms and elaborating legal details through scholarly activities. However, the term shari‘a designates the laws of Islam. Jurists (fuqaha’) discover and express the shari‘a. accordingly, the Western concept of ‘legal system’, i.e. the bureaucratic structures of government, is carried by fiqh. The present volume treats of different branches of law, e.g. private, public, criminal, and international, as applied in Muslim countries. This book is part of a series of translations from the Encyclopaedia of the World of Islam (EWI) which was originally compiled in Persian. Other entries from this encyclopaedia which are available in English include History and Historiography, Historical Sources of the Isamic World, Muslim Organisations in the Twentieth Century, Periodicals of the Muslim World, and Hawza-yi ‘Ilmiyya.

Islam is a perfect faith and way of life. It is a complete system in itself, for the life in this world and the next world. For knowing Islam, it is essential to study its philosophy, ideology and principles and for that, one has to approach original sources, viz. Holy Quran and Tradition. However, it is not possible for every one to refer to these sources, which are originally in Arabic. Of course, there are commentaries and explanatory books in Persian, Urdu as well as in English and other western languages. Still, it remains difficult to take benefit of these voluminous secondary sources. Hence, a dire need for a comprehensive and exhaustive work on Islam was felt. This exclusive multi-volume is aimed at filling that room. The International Encyclopaedia of Islam consists of nine volumes and successfully covers all important aspects of Islam, as a religion and faith. These volumes, namely are: 1. Islamic Philosophy, 2. Faith in Islam, 3. Principles of Islam, 4. Islamic Manners, 5. Islam and Social Justice, 6. Judicial System in Islam, 7. Human Rights in Islam, 8. Islam and Education, 9. Science and Islam. These volumes virtually cover the whole Islam in a nutshell, which makes them reader-friendly. This multi-volume is essential for all scholars, researchers, students and general readers, the world over.

Outlines of Islamic jurisprudence covers a number of topics of usul al-fiqh, sometimes in abridged form, that have been covered in the title on the subject of Islamic Jurisprudence by the same author. The significance of this book can only be understood through a comparison with that book. Islamic jurisprudence focuses on the discipline of usul al-fiqh and deals with it in an exhaustive way. It, thus, covers the different aspects of interpretation and theories of Islamic law. The present book includes some of the topics covered in that book. The bulk of Outlines of Islamic Jurisprudence, however, summarizes the entire law of Islam presenting it in a concise yet effective way. Property, contracts, evidence, procedure, constitutional matters and issues of Muslim personal law (family law) are dealt with efficiently. The last part of the book also includes information on the schools of law and their history. Due to the treatment of the entire Islamic law in a comprehensive way, the book is like a short encyclopedia. The book was first published in 1998 and is now in its sixth edition. It is very popular among law students, lawyers and even the general readers. Minor improvements to the book have been made over the years and it is constantly updated. Parts of the book dealing with property and contracts are taught independently as a one semester course on contracts, in particular for Islamic banking. The section on the history of the schools serves as a brief introduction to the law of Islam.
