Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled 'The Construction of a Model of Community Care for Elderly People in Hong Kong' submitted by PANG Po Ling for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong in Feb 2001 This thesis is a study on the application of the community care model for elderly people in Hong Kong since the early 1970s to the present, focusing on the process of actualization in Chinese societies. This thesis attempts (1) to examine the dynamics that exists between the state, the family and the wider community in care provision for elderly people; (2) to identify problems in its application in Chinese societies; and (3) to rebuild the model so to be better applied in care provision for elderly people in Hong Kong. To study the local application of the community care model, qualitative methods of secondary analysis were used. Documents and studies iconcerning the local development of elderly services were reviewed. In-depth interviews were conducted with informed persons from different institutions to gather comments to enrich the research rationalization. Furthermore, comparisons were made with the development of elderly services in Singapore and Taiwan to examine the specialties in actualizing the community care model in Chinese societies. It is founded that the care provision of the state, the family and the wider community are subject to a number of variables in the changing societal environment. The existing actualization has mainly been dependent on the family as the major carer. However, affected by the changes in its structure and values, the capability and willingness of the family to care for its elderly members are obviously diminishing. Statutory services are limited to a minority of the elderly people. The state, affected by the variables of cost, legitimation and control, must take up the major caring responsibility, though it cannot expand its services indefinitely. Care provision for elderly people by the wider community, affected by the variables of community cohesiveness and socialization, has never been extensive. iiAfter all the community care model lacked a concrete guideline to follow and a central mechanism for implementation. The study suggests that the community care model must be rebuilt to work in Chinese societies, in which new policy goals must be set with explicit means and ends. A shift of statutory service provision from a short-term perception based on needs towards a longer-term strategy of prevention is necessary to support the family to be the carer. Only when formal and informal care provision, in both public and private sectors, are working harmoniously with one another can the model of community care be described as achieving its objectives. iii DOI: 10.5353/th_b2986636 Subjects: Older people - Care - China - Hong Kong Older people - Services for - China - Hong Kong

'The issue of Chinese diaspora is a fascinating phenomenon in the midst of globalism, and there is a growing interest in studies of overseas Chinese, not only overseas but in China itself. This volume, the result of an international conference on Chinese overseas studies, deals with issues of research and documentation of Chinese migration and migrants. It brings together the efforts of scholars and librarians in examining the research and documentation of Chinese overseas. Documentation must go hand in hand with research, and this book reiterates the need for greater cooperation between librarians and scholars. In addition to discussion on research and library and archival documentation, the book also takes a look at Chinese overseas in different parts of the world, especially Southeast Asia and North America, as well as South Africa and Cuba.

Different global healthcare challenges bring threats to the healthcare system. Like other developed countries, Hong Kong is also focusing on how to manage the ageing population, how to meet the rising public expectations, and how to finance the ever increasing medical costs. Strengthening community care services may provide a way out for settling these concerns. Written by a team of renowned scholars and leading practitioners, this book aims at evaluating how different parties can assist in building up local community capacity to achieve sustainable health and wellness. The book is divided into three sections. The first section discusses the different roles and practices of specialised community care that contribute to the relative success of the healthcare system in Hong Kong. The second section makes use of various research practices to extrapolate future healthcare needs and practices in Hong Kong. And the last one addresses the values of health care which underlie the healthcare culture, structure and practice in Hong Kong over time. Apart from pointing out the limitation of the current system, this book will also discusses the future directions of the healthcare system in order to cope with the challenges in a changing society. With longer life expectancy, most countries are now experiencing rapid ageing among their populations. Ethnic Chinese populations are no exception to these demographic transformations. During the twentieth century, there has been a wide dispersion of Chinese people throughout the world, as well as dramatic socio-political changes within China. These unique factors have strained traditional filial norms and necessitated a re-examination of intergenerational relationships and the roles of elderly Chinese people. This book investigates the varied adaptations of social support systems and social integration among ageing Chinese populations within a diverse set of countries in the Pacific Rim region. The book is a collection of scholarly papers addressing such topics as community care, family support, one-child families and social isolation. Each paper illustrates the importance of social support networks and social integration to the quality of life for elderly Chinese persons living in dissimilar circumstances.

This book explores how around the world, women’s increased presence in the labor force has reorganized the division of labor in households, affecting different regions depending on their cultures, economies, and politics; as well as the nature and size of their welfare states and the gendering of employment opportunities. As one result, the authors find, women are increasingly migrating from the global south to become care workers in the global north. This volume focuses on changing patterns of family and gender relations, migration, and care work in the countries surrounding the Pacific Rim—a global epicenter of transnational care migration. Using a multi-scalar approach that addresses micro, meso, and macro levels, chapters examine three domains: care provisioning, the supply of and demand for care work, and the shaping and framing of care. The analysis reveals that multiple forms of global inequalities are now playing out in the most intimate of spaces.
