This volume brings together selected papers presented during the 9th International Conference of the Association of Czech Teachers of English, titled “Teaching for Tomorrow” and hosted by the English Department of the Faculty of Science, Humanities and Education at the Technical University of Liberec, Czech Republic. The conference brought together English Language Teaching (ELT) professionals from primary, secondary and tertiary education to discuss a variety of English as a Foreign Language (EFL)-related topics, ranging from reports on language research to viewpoints and insights on classroom practice. The contributions are grouped into three sections: a) Focus on Selected Language Topics, b) Increasing Learner Autonomy and c) Innovative Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) ideas. Papers were carefully chosen in order to appeal to a broad audience. Consequently, there are articles which have a mainly theoretical bent and those which have a more practical leaning. Although the conference was hosted in the Czech Republic and the majority of participants were from this country, the book is relevant to any context where English is taught as a foreign or second language. Service, Satisfaction and Climate: Perspectives on Management in English Language Teaching presents the results of research carried out in New Zealand to demonstrate the ways ELT can be conceptualized in terms of service and climate. Although ESL is a major worldwide service industry employing large numbers of professionals and serving millions of clients, it is an under-researched field and one that is under-represented in the management/business literature. This omission is particularly noticeable, given that ELT has its own particular themes, problems, and issues. For instance, ELT is an educational service, yet exists within a commercial context. Its clients are from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. In many ELT contexts, the cultural and linguistic backgrounds of the service providers are different from those of the clients. Thus, the service provision has a strong cross-cultural dimension. Yet the ELT sector is largely missing from the educational and the management literature. This book seeks to fill the gap through discussion of ELT as a service, issues surrounding ELT teachers as service providers, the work of ELT managers, client expectations and perceptions of ELT service, comparison of staff estimates and client ratings of service quality, and considerations of service milieu and climate in ELT centers.

This book examines racism and racialized discourses in the ELT profession in South Korea. The book is informed by a number of different critical approaches to race and discourse, and the discussions contained in the chapters offer one way of exploring how the ELT profession can be understood from such perspectives. Observations made are based on the understanding that racism should not be viewed as individual acts of discrimination, but rather as a system of social structures. While the book is principally concerned with language teaching and learning in South Korea, the findings are situated in a wider discussion of race and ethnicity in the global ELT profession. The book makes the following argument: White normativity is an ideological commitment and a form of racialized discourse that comes from the social actions of those involved in the ELT profession; this normative model or ideal standard constructs a system of racial discrimination that is founded on White privilege, saviorism and neoliberalism. Textbooks are indispensable components and in some case the cornerstones of the mission of English Language Teaching (ELT). However, they are artefacts of a pedagogical culture that rarely echo the concerns of their most prolific consumers: teachers and students. This book offers a useful framework for evaluating ELT textbooks from a critical discourse perspective; one that is based on sound current research but also offers practical guidance to teachers. Building from a foundational understanding of ELT textbooks, the author presents a systematic procedure to critically analyze their multimodal discourse, examine how those discourses are negotiated between teachers and students in class, and measure how those consumers privately value the lessons.
