Excerpt from Sanitary Fittings and Plumbing During the last quarter of a century, so many books have been written on the sanitation of build ings that there would be little need for another work on any part of the subject, were it not that sanitary science is still rapidly progressing. New discoveries and inventions are continually pressing for notice, and old problems are being solved in new ways. In this book an attempt has been made to enunciate the general principles now governing the design of sanitary work in buildings, and also to describe and illustrate the most important modern sanitary fittings and the plumber's work in connection with them. No claim is made that the book is exhaustive, but the author ventures to hope that it will prove sufficiently thorough to be of use to the young architect, sanitary engineer, and plumber, and that it may also serve as a guide to the householder in the choice of fittings, and enable him to distinguish good work from bad. The greater part of the book appeared as a series of articles in T/ze Builder during the first half of this year, but fresh matter has been added to render the work more complete. Excerpt from Lectures to Plumbers According to a promise made in the preface to the first series of these lectures, and also to many private correspondents, this volume is now issued. The Author's aim is not to preach any new doctrine but to deal with details Of every-day practice, many of which are not thought of by most writers on plumbing, or are considered as being too small and trivial to be worth consideration. The successful man is the one who studies details, and it is the attention paid to small matters that either makes or mars a job in plumbers' work. Being a good lead-bosser or a good joint-wiper is not nearly sufficient Many such men make serious mistakes owing to their lack of knowledge of first principles. Quite recently a large college was inspected and a report made by the Author as to the sanitary conditions. Amongst the many defects discovered were about twelve wash-basins with the overflow pipes connected to the waste pipes on the wrong sides of the traps; and yet the joints and the bends in the pipes were made as well as they possibly could be. It is not necessary to here dwell upon other such mistakes made in the execution of plumbers' work, as numbers of cases are referred to in the following pages. Elements of Plumbingby Samuel Edward DibbleModern plumbing as a trade is the arranging and running of pipes to supply pure water to buildings, the erecting of fixtures for the use of this supply, and the installing of other pipes for the resulting waste water. The work of the trade divides itself therefore into two parts: first the providing an adequate supply of water; and second, the disposing of this water after use. The first division offers few problems to the plumber, little variety in the layout being possible, and the result depending mostly upon the arrangement of the pipes and fittings; but the second division calls for careful study in the arrangement, good workmanship in the installing, and individual attention to each fixture. The trade had its beginnings in merely supplying fresh water to a community. This was done by means of trenching, or conveying water from lakes, rivers, or springs through wooden pipes or open troughs. By easy stages the trade improved and enlarged its scope, until at the present time it is able to provide for the adequate distribution of tons of water under high pressure furnished by the city water works. In the early years of the trade the question of the disposal of the waste water was easily answered, for it was allowed to be discharged onto the ground to seek its own course. But with the increased amount of water available, the waste-water problem has enlarged until today it plays the most important part of plumbing, and the trade has had to change to meet this waste-water problem. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Excerpt from Plumbing Plans and Specifications The book is divided into four parts. The first part is devoted to a presentation of symbols which it is urged to adopt. This is more important than it may seem. If ten different plans, from as many different offices, be examined, the chances are that in no two of them will the symbols be alike. Further, plans prepared in the same office at differ ent times, or by different draughtsmen at the same time, often have unlike symbols. That is rather confusing to those who must interpret the plans, and in the interest of simplicity and uniformity some standards should be adopted. Excerpt from Lectures on the Science and Art of Sanitary Plumbing When asked by the chairman of the National Health Society, Mr. Ernest Hart, to give a series of lectures on. Plumbing to plumbers, a doubt crossed my mind as to whether we should be able to get a good attendance of plumbers to hear them; for plumbers are, as a class, very inde pendent, and difficult to draw out; they are still more difficult to turn, especially when they have a roll of lead on their shoulders. Therefore, before deciding to deliver these lectures, I asked Mr. Hart to give me a week to think over the matter, and for enquiries to be made of the general London working plumbers, to hear whether they would be likely to attend in any force. I soon found that any doubt as to the interest plumbers would take in these lectures might be instantly removed, and the attendance. Excerpt from Principles and Practice of Plumbing In these days of strong competition the man in any trade or profession who does not provide himself with the best tools, the most efficient appliances obtainable, for executing his work expeditiously and efficiently, does him self a great injustice. It is true that some men may become so skilled in their work that they can do what they want to do - can execute their work - with very poor instruments; can, in fact, do better work with poor tools than unskilled men can do with good tools: but no inexperienced man, no improver, no student-plumber, should remain content with his kit his bag of tools - until it contains a perfect tool for any and every piece of work he may be called upon to execute. Excerpt from Modern Plumbing Why continue to carry water for the house, for the stock or the garden, trudging through the rain and snow, when you can have running water any place you want it on the farm for such a small investment? Did you ever stop to think of the number of tons of water that are carried on the average farm in the course of a year where there is no Modern Water Supply System installed? Just stop a moment and figure the number of bucket fuls of water that you carry from the pump every day, and then figure what this amounts to in the way of hard labor in the course of a year. When this is reduced to actual figures, the result is really startling, and if those folks who continue to carry water day after day could realize how easy it is to eliminate all this unnecessary labor, we feel sure there would not be a farm home in the country without one of these Modern Water Supply Systems.
