The most common use of the word agriculture is that in which it stands for the production of field cr0ps such as grains, grasses, and roots. By extension it is taken to include the breeding and care of live-stock for work or for the production of meat and milk on the products of cultivation. This is called mixed farming or general farming. The special production of milk is called dairy farming. The grazing of stock over Wide areas with a minimum of cultivation is called ranching. It may be concerned with horses, cattle, or sheep, and so is called horse-ranching, catt.le sheep-ranching. Excerpt from One Hundred Lessons in Elementary Agriculture: A Manual and d104 of Elementary Agriculture for Rural Schools The preparation of this book is an effort to combine in convenient form the directions for the laboratory experiments, field exercises, text-book studies, and notebook work, which the author has found most practical and helpful in teaching elementary agriculture and nature-study in rural and consolidated schools. It has been the aim of the author to simplify the subject-matter, materials and methods usually presented in text-books on agriculture, so that the teacher in the one-room county school, in the grammar grades of a graded school or in the beginning years of a high school may find the lessons easily practical, within the range of the pupils' understanding, and full of profitable interest and educational value. It is a text-book and manual combined, for the purpose of leading away from the usual text-book method of teaching, to the method of first-hand contact with the real things of Agriculture. If the work is not conducted by means of real things, the educational value is lost, and the information given not permanently retained. The lessons do not follow each other in very close sequence, each lesson being independent, permitting the teacher to choose as the season and occasion make the materials available. It is not the purpose to make "ready made" lessons, which will discourage or take away the need of effort on the part of the teacher. but to furnish suggestive subject-matter and methods upon which he may build from his own initiative and resourcefulness. Excerpt from Manual of Agriculture for the Public Schools, State of Vermont A manual on elementary agriculture for use in Ver mont schools, - one which shall consist of simple exercises, ex planations and observations, one which requires only every day appliances, one in which each exercise is replete with question marks, - such a manual ought to be well worth while, and such the present issue is meant to be. It is the product of several persons. The matter dealing with elementary forestry (exercises 58-66) is written by State Forester A. F. Hawes, while the remainder is the product of three graduates of the Agricultural Department of the Uni versity of Vermont, Principal G. Leland Green and instructor Leo C. Cook of the State School of Agriculture at Randolph Center and Thomas J. Abbott, of East Bethel. Mr. Green and Mr. Abbott contributed Exercises 1 to 26, 47, 67 to 70, while Mr. Cook furnished the matter dealing with plant life, Exercises 27-46, 48-56. Many of the exercises are furnished with references to state and governmental publications which, if in print, are free for the asking.
