A practical and highly popular guide for electrical contractors of small installations, now fully revised in accordance with the latest wiring regulations The book is a clearly written practical guide on how to design and complete a range of electrical installation projects in a competitive manner, while ensuring full compliance with the new Wiring Regulations (updated late 2008). The updated regulations introduced changes in terminology, such as ‘basic’ and ‘fault protection’, and also changed the regulation numbers. This new edition reflects these changes. It discusses new sections covering domestic, commercial, industrial and agricultural projects, including material on marinas, caravan sites, and small scale floodlighting. This book provides guidance on certification and test methods, with full attention given to electrical safety requirements. Other brand new sections cover protective measures, additional protection by means of RCDs, the new cable guidelines for thin wall partitions and Part P of the Building Regulations. Provides simple, practical guidance on how to design electrical installation projects, including worked examples and case studies Covers new cable guidelines and Part P of the Building Regulations (Electrical Installations) in line with 17th edition of the Wiring Regulations BS 7671:2008 New chapters on protective measures and additional protection by means of RCDs (residual current devices) Features new wiring projects such as marinas, caravan sites and small scale floodlighting and street lighting Fully illustrated, including illustrations new to the fourth edition

The basic theory, principle of operation and characteristics of transformers, three-phase induction motors, single-phase induction motors, synchronous machines and dc machines are dealt with in Appendices to provide the background for the design of these machines. The initial chapters of the book are devoted to basic parameters of design of electrical apparatus, characteristics of magnetic, electric and insulating materials, construction of electrical machines, and basic design requirements of magnetic and electrical circuits of machines. Detailed procedures for designing transformers, three-phase induction motors, single-phase induction motors, synchronous machines and dc machines are explained in a simple and logical way. Several sample designs have been wroked out in detail. Methods of carrying out various tests and maintaining test records are discussed in detail. The use of computers in designing electrical machines has been illustrated. An exclusive chapter on special machines explains the basic theory and applications of stepper motors, rotating phase converters, pole amplitude modulated (PAM) motors, reluctance motors and energy efficient motors. This book is intended for degree and diploma students of electrical engineering and professional examinations of the Institution of Engineers (India). It will be useful for electrical engineers in industry engaged in design, manufacture and testing of electrical machines.

This book is a comprehensive set of articles reflecting the latest advances and developments in mathematical modeling and the design of electrical machines for different applications. The main models discussed are based on the: i) Maxwell–Fourier method (i.e., the formal resolution of Maxwell’s equations by using the separation of variables method and the Fourier’s series in 2-D or 3-D with a quasi-Cartesian or polar coordinate system); ii) electrical, thermal and magnetic equivalent circuit; iii) hybrid model. In these different papers, the numerical method and the experimental tests have been used as comparisons or validations.

An in-depth exploration of shipboard power generation and distribution system design that utilizes variable frequency drives The variable frequency drive (VFD) application is a proven technology for shore-based applications. However, shore-based VFDs often are unsuitable for shipboard applications because the power generation and distribution fundamentals are completely different. VFD Challenges for Shipboard Electrical Power System Design explores the problems presented by variable frequency drives as they are applied in shipboard power generation and distribution system design and offers solutions for meeting these challenges. VFDs with configurations such as six pulse drive, 12 pulse drive, 18 pulse drive, active front end, pulse width modulation and many others generate many different levels of harmonics. These harmonics are often much higher than the regulations allow. This book covers a range of techniques used to provide ships with efficient energy that minimizes mechanical and electrical stress. This important book: Offers a comparison of shipboard grounding and VFD grounding Contains an analysis of the VFD effect in terms of shipboard power quality Includes specific examples of Department of Transportation standards regarding VFDs Written for commercial and naval engineers designing ships and/or shipboard power systems, VFD Challenges for Shipboard Electrical Power System Design is a comprehensive resource that addresses the problems and solutions associated with shipboard applications of VFD.

Electrical Design of a 400 kV Composite Tower

Electrical Design of a 400 kV Composite Tower
Author: Tohid Jahangiri
Publisher: Springer
Total Pages: 254
Release: 2019-04-23
Genre: Technology & Engineering
ISBN: 3030178439

This book presents an innovative concept for designing a 400 kV double circuit composite tower. The major challenges encountered by the authors in the electrical design process of the composite tower are addressed. They concern material selection for the full composite cross-arm core, electrical insulation of the cross-arm, electrical dimensioning of the full composite tower, lightning shielding performance and failure of the full composite tower. The electric field performance of the tower’s insulation has been investigated theoretically by using finite element method and experimentally by testing different fiber reinforced polymers as candidates. The book reports in detail those finite element simulations and tests, together with the authors’ recommendations on the most suitable materials and manufacturing process as well as conductor clamp designs for the cross-arm. Another important issue of the full composite tower, which concerns the environmental aspects of the full composite tower, has also been evaluated. This book offers a timely reference guide on a highly innovative topic, addressing researchers working on power transmission system both in industry and academia.
