In 1994 the worst episode of genocide since the Holocaust of the Second World War ravaged the Central African country of Rwanda. Derick Burleson lived there and taught at the National University during the two years leading up to the genocide. The poems in this collection explore the cataclysm in a variety of forms and voices through the culture, myths, and customs he absorbed during this time. Ejo, meaning "yesterday and tomorrow" in Kinyarwandan, celebrates in language both lyrical and austere the lives of the friends Burleson made in Rwanda, those who survived to tell their own stories, and those whose voices were silenced.

"This volume containing a translation, annotations, and historical studies of Giun's (1200-1253) Verse Comments on Dōgen's Treasury of the True Dharma Eye (Shōbōgenzō hinmokuju) represents the initial book-length contribution to a crucial though previously unnoticed sub-field in Japanese Buddhist studies involving text-historical and literary-philological examinations of a key example of the copious premodern collections of annotations and interpretations of the masterwork of Zen master Dōgen. It is the first study of the life and thought of Giun and of the 60-fascicle version of Dōgen's masterwork, which are crucial for understanding the history of the Sōtō Zen Buddhist sect's intellectual development. The main translation of this texts consists of four-line verses and capping phrases composed by Giun, which is accompanied by additional capping phrases that were contributed by an eighteenth-century commentator, Katsusdō Honkō. The book also provides an examination of the background and influences exerted on and by Giun's Verse Comments in relation to various aspects of Dōgen's writings and Zen thought in China and Japan"--

Provides easy learning and understanding of DWT from a signal processing point of view Presents DWT from a digital signal processing point of view, in contrast to the usual mathematical approach, making it highly accessible Offers a comprehensive coverage of related topics, including convolution and correlation, Fourier transform, FIR filter, orthogonal and biorthogonal filters Organized systematically, starting from the fundamentals of signal processing to the more advanced topics of DWT and Discrete Wavelet Packet Transform. Written in a clear and concise manner with abundant examples, figures and detailed explanations Features a companion website that has several MATLAB programs for the implementation of the DWT with commonly used filters “This well-written textbook is an introduction to the theory of discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and its applications in digital signal and image processing.” -- Prof. Dr. Manfred Tasche - Institut für Mathematik, Uni Rostock Full review at https://zbmath.org/?q=an:06492561

The production of multi layered thin films with sufficient reliability is a key technology for device fabrication in micro electronics. In the Co/Cu type multi layers, for example, magnetoresistance has been found as large as 80 % at 4. 2 K and 50 % at room temperature. In addition to such gigantic mag netoresistance, these multi layers indicate anti ferromagnetic and ferromag netic oscillation behavior with an increase in the thickness of the layers of the non magnetic component. These interesting properties of the new synthetic flmctional materials are attributed to their periodic and interracial structures at a microscopic level, although the origin of such peculiar features is not fully understood. Information on the surface structure or the number density of atoms in the near surface region may provide better insight. Amorphous alloys, frequently referred to as metallic glasses, are produced by rapid quenching from the melt. The second generation amorphous alloys, called "bulk amorphous alloys", have been discovered in some Pd based and Zr based alloy systems, with a super cooled liquid region at more than 120 K. In these alloy systems, one can obtain a sample thickness of several centime ters. Growing scientific and technological curiosity about the new amorphous alloys has focused on the fundamental factors, such as the atomic scale struc ture, which are responsible for the thermal stability with certain chemical compositions.

Those of us blessed with a comfortable life are definitely a minority compared to those who are not. Not by the number maybe, but by the sheer scale of misery the unfortunate lot go through for absolutely no fault of theirs. Children suffering physical and sexual abuse at the hands of adults who are supposed to protect them, young adolescents succumbing to bullying by their peers, the poor and less privileged being exploited by the conscienceless affluent, young women getting trafficked into the flesh trade by the mindless pimpgangs... and the list goes on. DREAD stalks these hapless souls and drives them through extremely frightening dark alleys... forcing them fight it out all by themselves with no help in sight, till they sight the end of their very lives. The Hope Mafia turns the table on this rather stark, dreary scenario by unleashing a positive energy that eclipses the depressive reality with a far more violent offensive. And the plot bolsters itself on this creative premise: Because the agents of The Hope Mafia are up for a formidable task, they are coded with an altruistic DNA and endowed with some special powers to accomplish their mission.
