Excerpt from Fourteenth Annual Report of the Registrar-General of Births, Deaths, and Marriages in England Until the census of 18 51 had been taken, the rates of marriage, birth, and of mortality were necessarily calculated on the population returns of 1841 raised, as the population was known to be increasing, in the pro portion inferred from the rate that had been found to prevail between 1831 and 1841. We now learn from the census that the population after the year 1841 was overstated to a slight extent by this assumption; the population of England and Wales increased rather faster in the ten years 1831 - 41 than it did in the ten years 1841-51, when emigration became more active; for the annual rate of increase of the population at home and abroad was 1 326 in the former, 1 216 per cent. In the latter period. The population at home in England and Wales, or exclusive of the por tion of the army, navy, and merchant seamen abroad, in the middle of the years 1841 and 18 51 was and and therefore, upon the hypothesis that the increase was uniformly in a geometrical ratio, the annual rate of increase was 122o. The rate of increase in the years 1838, 1839, 1840, was taken to be 1' 326; the exact proportion of the population at home in 183 1 not having been determined.
