Excerpt from Effects of Variations in Gin and Mill Cleaning on the Lint and Yarn Quality of Mechanically Picked and Stripped Cottons Another factor that can affect the amount of trash in cotton is whether it is picked before or after frost. Cotton picked after frost contains more trash as a result of the plant becoming brittle and thus less able to withstand the mechanical action of the picker. This study was designed to determine the ef feets of several combinations of gin and mill cleaning conditions on lint and yarn quality. In preliminary tests two lots of seed cotton were ginned without being subjected to drying or cleaning equipment. One lot was picked be fore frost, and the other lot was picked after frost. The resulting lint was considered to have excellent uniformity and to have fewer neps than lint that had been processed through the normal cleaners and driers. In addition, the trash was of large particle size, and such parti cles do not present as many removal problems at the mill as do fine particles.
