Het Buginees—met een geschat aantal sprekers van tweeëneenhalf miljoen de grootste taal van Zuid-Sulawesi—kent een eeuwenlange schriftelijke overleving. Daaronder bevinden zich belangwekkende producten van historiografische en letterkundige aard. Hoe erkend belangrijk deze ook zijn, wetenschappelijke verantwoorde edities van dergelijke teksten zijn schaars, een omstandigheid die voor een groot deel kan worden verlaard door de aard van het Buginese schrift dat vatbaar is voor meerdere uitleg. In de hier uitgegeven tekst zijn op geraffineerde wijze literaire en historische elementen met elkaar vervlochten. In de vorm van een heldendicht, toloq, wordt het verhaal verteld van Arung Labuaja, een op Zuid-Sulawesi nog steeds roemrucht hoofd met grote militair-tactische talenten. Ruime plaats is in het gedicht toegekend aan de gebeurtenissen tijdens de door het Nederlands-Indische leger uitgevoerde Vierde Boné-expeditie van 1905, waarna het Bonése vorstenbestuur ophield te functioneren en werd vervangen door het Nederlands gezag. Met Arung Labuaja als middelpunt van het verhaal, vervult de tekst—gehuld in poëtisch gewaad—de hoofdzakelijke Nederlandse bronnen over de periode op verscheidene punten aan. Intertidal History in Island Southeast Asia shows the vital part maritime Southeast Asians played in struggles against domination of the seventeenth-century spice trade by local and European rivals. Looking beyond the narrative of competing mercantile empires, it draws on European and Southeast Asian sources to illustrate Sama sea people's alliances and intermarriage with the sultanate of Makassar and the Bugis realm of Boné. The book is a grammar of the Makasar language, spoken by about 2 million people in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Makasarese is a head–marking language which marks arguments on the predicate with a system of pronominal clitics, following an ergative/absolutive pattern. Full noun phrases are relatively free in order, while pre-predicate focus position which is widely used. The phonology is notable for the large number of geminate and pre–glottalised consonant sequences, while the morphology is characterised by highly productive affixation and pervasive encliticisation of pronominal and aspectual elements. The work draws heavily on literary sources reaching back more than three centuries; this tradition includes two Indic based scripts, a system based on Arabic, and various Romanised conventions.

The Bugis Chronicle of Bone is a masterwork in the historiographical tradition of South Sulawesi in Indonesia. Written in the late seventeenth century for a very specific political purpose, it describes the steady growth of the kingdom of Bone from the fourteenth century onwards. The local conquests of the fifteenth century, closely linked to agricultural expansion, give way to the long conflict with the Makasar state of Gowa in the sixteenth century. Forced Islamisation in 1611 is dealt with in detail, leading finally to first contact with the Dutch East India Company in 1667. This edition presents a diplomatic version of the best Bugis text, together with the first full English translation and an extensive introduction covering the philological approach to the edition, as well as the historical and cultural significance of the work. A structure based on the reigns of successive rulers allows for stories about the circumstances of each ruler and, particularly, the often dramatic processes and politics of succession. The chronicle is a rich source for historians and anthropologists seeking to understand societies beyond Europe. It provides a window on to this Austronesian-speaking society before the impact of significant external influences. This is history from within, covering more than three centuries.

Preserved on undated palm-leaf manuscripts, Old Sundanese texts are generally in poor condition and unavailable to a wider audience. There are limited texts in any form of Sundanese, and only limited knowledge of Old Sundanese. In presenting three long Old Sundanese poems, Noorduyn and Teeuw, in a heretofore unequalled English-language study of Old Sundanese literature, bring to the light works of importance for further linguistic, literary and historical research. The three poems, The Sons of Rama and Rawana, The ascension of Sri Ajnyana and The story of Bujangga Manik: A pilgrim's progress were undiscovered before this book. The first two were found in a nineteenth-century manuscript collection of the former Batavian Society and are now in the National Library of Indonesia in Jakarta, while the third was donated to the Bodleian Library in Oxford as early as 1627, though it was not identified as an Old Sundanese poem until the 1950s.

The reaspns why the period following the English interregnum in the Netherlands Indies and preceding the establishment of the Compulsory Cultivation system has been chosen as the sub ject of this thesis are the following: 1. Until recently this period, which is of the greatest importance if one desires to know why the Compulsory Cultivation system was introduced, has been rather neglected and treated according to preconceived ideas. Because of that, a wrong interpretation has been given to the attempts to establish a liberal colonial policy. In the light of new evidence, we hope to arrive at a more correct evaluation of the principles, which governed Dutch colo nial policy during that period. 2. By studying this period and especially the attempts to align the colonial policy with the new principles of liberalism, we hope to find some general principles which may be of value for a better understanding of the problems which confront the Dutch at present in the Indies. Regardless of the intrinsic value of the new liberal principles in colonial policy, it can be easily understood that their success or failure depended very much on a correct evaluation of the impact which previous policies had had on the Indonesian society.

State Communication and Public Politics in the Dutch Golden Age describes the political communication practices of the authorities in the early modern Netherlands. Der Weduwen provides an in-depth study of early modern state communication: the manner in which government sought to inform its citizens, publicise its laws, and engage publicly in quarrels with political opponents. These communication strategies, including proclamations, the use of town criers, and the printing and affixing of hundreds of thousands of edicts, underpinned the political stability of the seventeenth-century Dutch Republic. Based on systematic research in thirty-two Dutch archives, this book demonstrates for the first time how the wealthiest, most literate, and most politically participatory state of early modern Europe was shaped by the communication of political information. It makes a decisive case for the importance of communication to the relationship between rulers and ruled, and the extent to which early modern authorities relied on the active consent of their subjects to legitimise their government.
