The contributions collected in this volume take a fresh look at the traditional debate on education, training and labour market outcomes. The quality of education is difficult to measure in the education market and does not always find clear recognition in the labour market. The book provides new empirical evidence on these themes, including data specifically relating to Italy and the UK.

While considerable empirical evidence exists concerning the effectiveness of education in general, there has been less emphasis on understanding, from a comparative European perspective, the effect of the type of education on labour market outcomes for young people. Using data from the EU labour force survey 2009 ad hoc module, this report focuses on the labour market outcomes of VET. Comparing levels and orientations of education, it considers employment, occupation or sector differences, the education-to-work transition process, job quality and the effect on wages. The report underlines that initially VET results in positive labour market outcomes, which should be placed in a longer-term context, given the effect that structural changes in European Union labour markets will have on the demand for occupations in different sectors -- EU Bookshop.

'. . . this is an interesting and valuable book. . . a genuinely useful contribution to the literature. . . It will help all those who are engaged in exploring the relationship between education and training on the one hand and obtaining and maintaining employment on the other hand.' - Stephen Drodge, International Journal of Educational Development Education and training are of critical importance to individual employment prospects. This book questions whether the policies that govern education, training and employment actually facilitate or inhibit social integration. the authors analyse initial entry into the labour market and subsequent movements between employers, and explore links between education, training and the labour market. the book argues that although education is a good predictor of labour market integration and employment potential, and despite political efforts, social background nevertheless remains influential. the importance of continued training to improve opportunities for promotion is also demonstrated.

"Overeducation is one of the most important mechanisms for labor market adjustment when there is an excess supply of high-skilled workers. However, there is much debate about the consequences of this phenomena and the short and long term effects for both the overeducated worker and the economy as a whole. This book contributes to our understanding of recent developments in the research on overeducation by providing a detailed overview of the pertinent theoretical and policy issues."

This report focuses on the outcomes of vocational education and, in particular, on the transition from education to work in the current employment situation for young adults in the European Union. Using anonymised microdata from the EU labour force survey 2009 ad hoc module, this is one of the first studies to undertake a large crosscountry comparison of the labour market outcomes of different education orientations and levels. The report underlines that vocational education graduates experience initially positive labourmarket outcomes relative to graduates of medium-level general education. Vocational graduates enjoy a faster transition to work, are more likely to have a permanent first job, and are less likely to find a first job with a qualification mismatch. Additional country level analysis is complemented by an investigation of national institutional features as a possible explanation for cross-country differences in VET labour market outcomes.

This book offers a comprehensive empirical analysis of educational inequalities and their consequences on individual labour market outcomes for men and women in France and Germany, two countries with different education systems. Using microdata of either country, the analyses mainly rely on econometric methods. After a detailed comparison of the French and the German education systems, the social determinants of school and post-school attainment are analysed. Then, the extent to which education reduces the unemployment risk is examined, distinguishing between risk of entering unemployment, unemployment duration and recurrence of unemployment episodes. Finally, evidence is given on the impact of education on individual earnings prospects.
