The field of Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) has attracted increasing attention during the last few years. OOP is now recognized as an important tool for making better and more flexible information systems. This book is the proceedings of the second European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming (ECOOP '88) that was held in Oslo, Norway, from August 15 to 17, 1988. This volume constitutes the proceedings of the sixth European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming (ECOOP), held in Utrecht, The Netherlands, June 29 - July 3, 1992. Since the "French initiative" to organize the first conference in Paris, ECOOP has been a very successful forum for discussing the state of the art of object orientation. ECOOP has been able to attract papers of a high scientific quality as well as high quality experience papers describing the pros and cons of using object orientation in practice. Branching Programs are, besides Boolean circuits, the most important nonuniform model of computation. This volume gives a survey of the latest research in this field. It presents a branching program-based approach to complexity theory. Starting with a definition of branching programs and a review of the former research, nondeterministic branching programs are introduced and investigated, thus allowing the description of some fundamental complexity classes. The book then concentrates on the new concept of Omega-branching programs. Apart from the usual binary tests they contain features for evaluating certain elementary Boolean functions and are suited for characterizing space-bounded complexity classes. By means of these characterizations the author demonstrates the separation of some restricted complexity classes. In the appendix a number of extremely restricted graph-accessibility problems are given, which are, due to the branching program descriptions in chapters 1-3, p-projection complete in the classes under consideration.

Detailed descriptions of 44 major potentially active (Holocene) volcanoes form the core of the book. A compendium of geographical and morphological data on location, type, synonyms, summit elevation, edifice height, and status for each center, is followed by a summary of the structural and volcanological evolution of the edi- fice, historic and present activity, petrological and geochemical data, and an assessment of volcanic hazard. Each entry is superbly illustrated with a false color Landsat Thematic Mapper image, maps and ground photographs. Chapters on Holocene minor centers, and long-lived silicic caldera complexes are also well illustrated and summarise the available information on these important structures. General characteristics of these Holocene centers are then synthesised with data from older episodes of volcanism in a final chapter discussing regional volcanic evolution. In addition, the volume also contains a database summarising morphological, relative age, and volcanological data for all identifiable volcanic editifices in this volcanic province.
