Toward Community-Based Learning contends that the ideal school offers the opportunity to understand reality in a way that connects teaching and education with conditions in the surrounding community and the student’s life and concerns. This view holds that problem solving requires an understanding and awareness of the whole, which can be achieved through direct activities. In this manner, learning is linked to its natural context, with ideal instruction being actively problem-oriented, holistic, and life-centered. This thought-provoking volume offers an essential and comprehensive picture of community-based learning in the field of education. The book deals with the history of community-based learning as well as its present applications, including its global successes and difficulties. The authors provide numerous pedagogical approaches that are designed to meet the challenges of contemporary education. They show how learning is connected with authentic community environments in which students can gain new understandings through solving emerging problems. They also demonstrate how teachers can make learning more functional and holistic so that students have the ability to work in new situations within the complex world around them. School-specific descriptions reveal how teachers and their students have implemented community-based projects in the U.S.A., India, and China at different times. Contributors are: Thomas L. Alsbury, Mary Ewans, Linda Hargreaves, Susan K. Johnsen, Eija Kimonen, Susan Kobashigawa, Karon N. LeCompte, Suzanne M. Nesmith, Raimo Nevalainen, and Lakia M. Scott.

The economies of the People's Republic of China and India have seen dramatic growth in recent years. As their respective successes continue to reshape the world's economic landscape, noted Chinese and Indian scholars have studied the two countries' development paths, in particular their rich and diverse experiences in such areas as education, information technology, local entrepreneurship, capital markets, macroeconomic management, foreign direct investment, and state-owned enterprise reforms. Drawing on these studies, ADB has produced a timely collection of lessons learned that serves as a valuable refresher on the challenges and opportunities ahead for developing economies, especially those in Asia and the Pacific.

ABOUT THE BOOK Since the early 1990s, the growth process in India has been marked by a remarkable performance of services sector. The experience of developed countries suggests that growth of services sector followed the growth of industrial sector. However, India?s experience in this regard is somewhat different. The sectoral shift in favour of services sector over the last two decades has taken place in the face of an almost stagnant share of industry and a reduced share of agriculture in GDP. In fact, it was the growth performance of the services sector during the 1990s which sustained the overall growth of the Indian economy, particularly in times of adverse agricultural shocks and industrial slowdown. While software exports are a well-known success story, India is now an important venue for many tasks in services such as financial accounting, call centres, processing insurance claims, and medical transcription. The future potential of growth in these areas appears to be considerable. This book explains recent policy measures by the Government of India to make India?s services sector internationally competitive. The book focuses on the following services: financial services, IT and IT-enabled services, retail trading services, healthcare services, insurance services, educational services, transport and communication services, and tourism. It also includes a chapter on taxation of services in India.
