This project started with the distinctly practical purpose of providing guidelines for the appraisal of farm property condemned for the construction of limited-access highways, and for the estimation of damages and benefits to the remaining part of the farm property which is not taken. The four sections of the report are geared to this practical purpose. The material in Part I of this report contains an up-to-date summary of the law of condemnation in Illinois. Part II of the study is intended to serve as a guide to establishing the basic value of farmland before it is taken for a highway right-of-way. Part III analyzes damage to a farm which has part of its acreage taken by condemnation. Part IV of the study deals with damages to a farm when land parcels become small, odd-shaped, or severed from the parcel where the farm headquarters is located. The distinct but related area of economic impact of the highway system has also been suggested for future research.
