The space race grew out of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union, the most powerful nations after World War II. For a half-century, they competed for primacy in a global struggle. Space was a crucial arena for this rivalry. Before a watchful world, each side sought to demonstrate its superiority through impressive feats in rocketry and space flight. Meanwhile, secret satellites were developed to keep a war eye on the adversary. At the Cold War's end, the United States and Russia agreed to build a space station and pursue other joint ventures in space. A contest that had begun in fear and enmity ended in partnership. Drawing on recently declassified material and featuring a wide variety of U.S. and Soviet artifacts, "Space race" examines the spectacular, publicly celebrated milestones of our first steps into space, as well as highly secret efforts to spy on adversaries from high above the Earth. In compelling photographs and terse, informed text, this book tells the story of time when the superpowers sought to make the heavens inseparable from the earth.

With the recent influx of spaceflight and satellite launches, the region of outer space has become saturated with vital technology used for communication and surveillance and the functioning of business and government. But what would happen if these capabilities were disrupted or even destroyed? How would we react if faced with a full-scale blackout of satellite communications? What can and has happened following the destruction of a satellite? In the short term, the aftermath would send thousands of fragments orbiting Earth as space debris. In the longer term, the ramifications of such an event on Earth and in space would be alarming, to say the least. This book takes a look at such crippling scenarios and how countries around the world might respond in their wake. It describes the aggressive actions that nations could take and the technologies that could be leveraged to gain power and control over assets, as well as to initiate war in the theater of outer space. The ways that a country's vital capabilities could be disarmed in such a setting are investigated. In addition, the book discusses our past and present political climate, including which countries currently have these abilities and who the aggressive players already are. Finally, it addresses promising research and space technology that could be used to protect us from those interested in destroying the world's vital systems.

On October 4, 1957 the Soviet Union launched Sputnik I, the first man-made satellite into low earth orbit. Although harmless, Sputnik I "beeped" continuously for over 3 weeks as it orbited the earth every 95 minutes and touched off a wave of anxiety in the United States. The race for space was on and those who had spent time pondering the potential impact of space on our national security clearly understood what Sputnik meant. Perhaps U.S. Air Force General Bernard Schriever, the father of our national military space program, summed it up best in 1957 when he recognized that " ... in the long haul, our safety as a nation may depend upon our achieving space superiority. Several decades from now the important battles may not be sea battles or air battles but space battles ..." General Schriever's assessment reflects the minds of U.S. strategists at the time and is now appreciated as a brilliant display of forward thinking about the importance of space to our national security. Since the dawn of the space age and Sputnik 41 years ago, space has played an increasing role in our national security and has had phenomenal effect on the development of our nation's science, technology, and economy. Today, there are over 2,560 active satellites in orbit around the earth. In addition to satellites, there are 88 deep space probes and over 6,100 various pieces of debris totaling over 8,800 man-made objects in space. Like General Schriever, today's strategists are again rediscovering that the ability to control space is essential to our national security. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of space control, review the present-day importance of space systems to the United States, discuss current and emerging threats to our space systems, address current issues regarding the control of space, and offer several recommendations as to how the Unites States should proceed to further enhance its national security concerning space.
