By: the James Hunter Chapter, NSDSAR of Madison, NC, Pub. 1977, reprinted 2022, 184 pages, Index, ISBN #0-89308-672-X. To complete this book, the publication committee of the James Hunter Chapter NSDAR used information from DAR applications for members of their chapter who descended from soldiers or patriots in this area. Most of the research on the families in this book was based on original records or publications of original records such as estate records, division of land, deeds, court records, cemetery, census, and Bible records, as well as pension applications of Revolutionary War soldiers or their widows. Guilford County from which Rockingham County was formed in 1785 and Surry County from which Stokes County was formed in 1789 were in Salisbury District of North Carolina. To be more specific, they were in that point of Salisbury District called the Upper Salisbury District. Rockingham is bordered by Pittsylvania and Henry Counties, Virginia and Caswell, Guilford, Alamance, and Stokes Counties, NC. Stokes County is bordered by Patrick County, VA and Rockingham, Forsyth and Surry County, NC. This Book has 156 biographical sketches of families/individuals of this area of North Carolina.

Based on recorded wills and original wills at the North Carolina State Archives as well as "Loose Estate Papers" of intestates, these abstracts cover not only wills but powers of attorney, bonds, inventories, bills of sale, etc. Significantly, Surry County lay within the Granville Proprietary at its formation, and after Lord Granville's death in 1763 until 1778, the Proprietary land office did not reopen, making it very difficult--but for these will abstracts--for the present-day researcher to establish the residence of many individuals during that time period. What is more, as there are no extant marriage bonds for Surry County for the period 1771 to 1780, these will abstracts assume an importance out of all proportion to their customary value.

On a trip here from Scotland, David Dobson searched the archives of North and South Carolina and found a mass of material proving the presence of a large number of Scots in the Carolinas before and after the Revolution. He located similar records in university libraries and historical societies, and he also found in the 1850 Federal Census more information on persons of Scottish origin. The result of this research appears here in Volume 1 of Directory of Scots in the Carolinas (see also Directory of Scots in the Carolinas, 1680-1830, Volume 2). In this work Mr. Dobson presents, for the first time, a comprehensive list of Scottish settlers in the Carolinas from 1680 to 1830. In general, the details provided include age, place and date of birth, and often names of parents, names of spouse and children, occupation, place of residence, and the date of emigration from Scotland. About 6,000 Scots are identified in this book, and a small number are listed in Dobson's Scottish Settlers series, but the majority--90% or so--are listed here for the first time.

The most comprehensive state project of its kind, the Dictionary provides information on some 4,000 notable North Carolinians whose accomplishments and occasional misdeeds span four centuries. Much of the bibliographic information found in the six volumes has been compiled for the first time. All of the persons included are deceased. They are native North Carolinians, no matter where they made the contributions for which they are noted, or non-natives whose contributions were made in North Carolina.
