If the word trinity isn’t in Scripture, why is it such an important part of our faith? And if the Bible can be interpreted in many ways, how do we know what to make of it? And who decided what should be in the Bible anyway? The Church Fathers provide the answers. These brilliant, embattled, and sometimes eccentric men defined the biblical canon, hammered out the Creed, and gave us our understanding of sacraments and salvation. It is they who preserved for us the rich legacy of the early Church. D’Ambrosio dusts off the dry theology and brings you the exciting stories and great heroes such as Ambrose, Augustine, Basil, Athanasius, Chrysostom, and Jerome. This page-turner will inspire and challenge you with the lives and insights of these seminal teachers from when the Church was young.

"The Eastern Church venerates among its saints several Early Christian women whose teaching and wisdom contribute to the depth of our theological heritage. Their inspired voices can be heard at work witnessing: in the New Testament, in the early centuries of the Church Fathers and throughout the Byzantine era. Readers will find this volume bringing female leaders from the Early Church to life from the traditional ancient sources and sharing their experience of the presence of God. Their remembered advice to followers still illuminates issues of faith and justice which bind us together as Christians today"--

This fascinating resource examines the day-to-day lives of early Christians—as depicted through documented accounts of the period—from the beginning of Christianity through 325 CE. Early Christianity drew its doctrine from a variety of sources—personal interpretation, Hebrew scriptures, and church council—yet the core ideology endured, even as the religion transitioned from being the object of persecution to becoming a legal institution in the Roman Empire. This book celebrates the voices that helped create and develop Christianity during that period. Voices of Early Christianity: Documents from the Origins of Christianity is a collection of excerpts from significant documents from early Christian history, organized topically, then listed chronologically within each section. The author compares textual variations among the works of the apostles, as well as key themes over time, and frames the discussion for further critical thinking. Topics include sexuality, marriage, and divorce; food issues; women in early Christianity; and politics and Christianity.

NextSunday Resources offers Bible studies designed to help adults study Scripture seriously within the context of the larger Christian tradition and, through that process, find their faith renewed, challenged, and strengthened. We study the Scriptures because we believe they affect our current lives in important ways. Inside, you'll find a Study Guide and a Commentary for each Lesson. For more small group Bible studies like this one, visit nextsunday.com/nextsunday-studies/ One of the challenges of written correspondence is saying all you want in as few words as possible. Sometimes the most meaningful and personal letters are the ones with only a few heartfelt words. The same is true for the New Testament letters we will explore in this unit. Although short in length, Philemon, Titus, Jude, and 2 Timothy communicate large ideas. Their appeals to the early Christian church echo beyond the text and into our lives as Christians. In the next four sessions, we listen to voices from the early church that speak of transforming faith, complete commitment, outward actions, and persecution. In Philemon, Paul confronts the church with a new way of thinking that ultimately transforms the whole community. Second Timothy speaks of commitment, even in a world of persecution. Not only does the author provide encouraging words for suffering, but he also challenges us to endure. Our third session from Titus focuses on the persecuted church in Crete. We will explore how this group of Christians relates to the community at large. Their public behavior is the focus of our attention. In Jude, persecution continues for the people of faith. "Scoffers" in the church were causing major divisions. The writer warns Christians about false teachers, and he gives them advice on how to deal with their brothers and sisters who have strayed from faith. Although we can never understand the extent to which the community of faith faced persecution, the voices of the early church still speak to our own struggles and difficulties as we seek to follow God. Even more, their words summon us to respond. As we begin this journey, may we open our ears and be ready to listen for God's voice.

The articles and talks included in this collection cover fifty years of theological engagement, the primary focus being on education for ministry in Australia and abroad. Despite the diversity of topics, such as hermeneutics, New Testament theology, preaching, ecumenical relations, and early church history, there is a connecting concern to listen to the unique voices of early Christian witnesses as foundational for the faith and the apostolic claims of the church in its present-day witness. The publication of these essays has been suggested for some time. Despite my reluctance to reissue articles written over a period of more than five decades, I have relented in the hope that there will be enough to engage the interest of a variety of readers, and not only former students in seminaries and theological colleges in Australia and various places overseas. Included here are mainly articles written specifically for publication in journals, but also lectures and talks to various groups of clergy, lay people, and theological students. Of prime concern has always been the explication of the Christian faith according to its earliest witnesses in the early church of apostles and martyrs. Faith remains attested and lived, approved not proven.
