Excerpt from Dudley, Vol. 3 of 3 Supposing, I continued, debating; in my own mind, I were to delay our mutual happiness yet longer, that I might gather the strongest proofs of attachment before I declare myself: or rather, ought I not to prove that her fortitude, and sense of female prudence, rs yet stronger than inclination. What if I were to put her, for one moment, on the rack of doubt and suspense; and, when human nature shall be able to bear no more, to throw OE the mask of duplicity at once, and own myself her future husband. Excerpt from Far Above Rubies, Vol. 3 of 3: A Novel What should he do? Lookmg back over the events of the previous twelve months, Squire Dudley lamented his own cre'dulity and anathematized Mr. Black. He did not regret joining the Protector, or accepting the secretaryship, or leaving Berrie Down, 0 but he hit his nails and drummed upon the table, and then, rising, kicked his chair over, and walked up and down the room, while he called himself all the names imaginable for having accepted bills and spent money, and bought the house in Lincoln's Inn Fields. He had been eager to buy that house the moment Mr. Black said it was in the market. He would scarcely take time to look over the premises before closing with the owner, so fearful was he of another purchaser forestalling' him; but he forgot all this now, and worked himself up into the belief that the promoter had given him no rest till the deposit was paid and the deeds were signed. This study referred to as a "preface" is given this designation because its basic aim is not to offer an up-to-date overall assessment of Dryden's translation of Virgil's Æneid but, rather, to provide a relevant basis for such an assessment ?thus allowing for a wide range of readership. The relevance of this approach rests on two basic premises: that of R. A. Brower, who maintains "that no translation can be understood or properly evaluated apart from the conditions of expression under which it was made," supported by Dryden's expressed intention "to make Virgil speak such English, as he wou'd himself have spoken, if he had been born in England, and in this present age," together providing a genuinely relevant basis for an understanding of Dryden's translation, "the conditions of expression" here allowing the inclusion of all the possible implications this phrase includes.
