Excerpt from Drama on the AirI have attempted to show that professional attitude, strong back ground, and knowledge of and ability to use certain techniques will result in richer personal satisfaction to the player and director and better fare for the listener. In the best of professional tradition, the reader is given background, means and method, and materials and application. In this book I have tried to combine the theory necessary for complete understanding of the radio play as a dramatic form with the tools and techniques that make it possible to translate the radio play into living drama. In attempting to write a definitive text, I have incurred obligations that I can only acknowledge, never repay. To my former colleague, Dr. William Peery, of the Department of English of the University of Texas, I am extremely indebted for criticism of portions of the first draft of Section One, and for many helpful suggestions on style and content of the book as a whole. I am also indebted for suggestions made by Dr. Albert Johnson, of the Department of Drama, and Mr. Thomas D. Rishworth, of Radio House, the Uni versity of Texas.I am most indebted to a group of Evanston friends. Professor Don ley Feddersen and Dr. Martin Maloney, of the Radio Department of Northwestern University's School of Speech, made extensive com ments on the manuscript and showed their real friendship by not allowing it to interfere with their critical comments and suggestions. Dr. Walter Scott, of the Drama faculty of the School of Speech, made some extremely helpful observations on Chapter 4. It is a real pleasure to record my obligation to Mr. Homer Heck, Program Manager of nbc's Central Division, who checked the entire manuscript. His assistance was invaluable.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Television drama has been the dominant form of popular storytelling for more than sixty years, shaping the imaginations of millions of people. This book surveys the careers of the central creators of those stories for Australian television—the writers who learnt how to work in a new medium, adapting to its constraints and exploring its creative possibilities. Informed by interviews with many writers, it describes the establishment of Australian television drama production, observing the way writers grasped the creative and business opportunities that television presented. It examines the development of Australian versions of the major television genres—the sitcom, the police drama, the historical series, docudrama, and social drama— presenting a ‘canon’ of significant Australian television drama productions that deserve to be remembered. It offers an account of the emergence of work by Indigenous writers for television and it argues for the consideration of television drama alongside histories of Australian film and stage drama. ‘For years, Susan Lever has been talking to Australia’s best television writers about their work, their craft and their industry. Now it’s all here in this book; a toast to a vital part of Australian culture.’ – Geoffrey Atherden ‘This is a wonderful book. Meticulously researched and engagingly written, it tells in fascinating detail, from the writers’ points of view, the story of Australian scripted television from its beginnings in the 1950’s, to the present. Better yet, Susan Lever has allowed the writers themselves to speak about the work, about their visions and processes, their joys and frustrations. I am delighted to see television drama, docudrama and comedy acknowledged so generously for their role in Australian culture.’ – Sue Smith ‘Brilliantly researched, lucid, comprehensive … the big picture on writers for the small screen in Australia.’ – Ian David

Israeli television, currently celebrating fifty years of broadcasting, has become one of the most important content sources on the international TV drama market, when serials such as Homeland, Hostages, Fauda, Zaguory Empire and In Treatment were bought by international networks, HBO included. Offering both a textual reading and discourse analysis of contemporary Israeli television dramas, Itay Harlap adopts a case study approach in order to address production, reception and technological developments in its accounts. His premise is that the meeting point between social trends within Israeli society (primarily the rise of opposition groups to the hegemony of the Zionist-Jewish-masculine-Ashkenazi ideologies) and major changes in the medium in Israel (which are comparable to international changes that have been titled "post-TV"), led to the creation of television dramas characterized by controversial themes and complex narratives, which present identities in ways never seen before on television or in other Israeli mediums.
