This book is a record of a doctor's life in the mid nineteenth century with the recipes for the medications he was prescribing at the time and a picture of his life as a Michigan pioneer physician. This was among a collection of books found in my grandmother's attic, and until recently, Dr. Hale was a mystery. We were able through research track down the family history and the descendants of the authors. The book collection came from my grandmother's uncle Elmer Thompson who owned a lumber baron's house in Lewiston, Michigan, and it is likely that he borrowed this book from the family and never returned it. The author uses the English apothecary system of weights and measures commonly used before 1864, and I have researched the ingredients used in the pills, potions and remedies he uses so I can discern the correct spelling and document its current use. Dr. Hale also has recipes for ice cream, mead, spruce beer, ginger beer, bird's nest pudding, and other food items. From my research, Dr. Hale's grandfather Benjamin F. Hale was also a doctor with entries in this book and his maternal grandfather Nathaniel Wallace was an aide to George Washington in the revolutionary war.

Two of America’s most popular authorities on healthy eating and cooking join forces in this inspiring, easy-to-use cookbook. This is not a diet book. It is a lively guide to healthy cooking, day-by-day, packed with essential information and, above all, filled with enticing food. Andrew Weil, M.D.—author of the best-selling Eating Well for Optimum Health—brings to this perfect collaboration a comprehensive philosophy of nutrition grounded in science. Rosie Daley—acclaimed for her best-seller, In the Kitchen with Rosie—brings to it her innovative and highly flavorful spa cuisine. The recipes are eclectic, drawing from the healthy and delicious cooking of the Middle East, the Mediterranean, and Asia, among other cuisines. For starters, you might try Grilled Satay or a Miso Pâté; for soup, often a meal in itself, a hearty Mixed-Bean Minestrone Stew or a Roasted Winter Squash and Apple Soup with Cilantro Walnut Pesto; a special entrée could be the Savory Roasted Cornish Hens with Roasted Garlic or Baked Spicy Tofu with Bean Thread Noodles, Corn, and Mango; for a simple supper, Turkey Burgers or Portobello Burgers; and for the occasional indulgence, a dessert of Almond Fruit Tart or Peach and Blueberry Cobbler. Andy and Rosie do not always agree. When Rosie calls for chicken, Andy offers a tofu alternative; she likes the flavor of coconut milk, whereas he prefers ground nut milk; when she makes a pastry with butter, he suggests using Spectrum Spread. There are no hard-and-fast rules. Lifelong health begins in the kitchen, so this is a lifestyle book as well as a cookbook. In it you will learn from Dr. Weil: • how to make use of nutritional information in everyday cooking • what is organic . . . and how to buy organic foods • the importance of reading labels and what to look for • sensible advice about eggs, milk, cheese, salt, spicy foods, wine, coffee • the facts about sugar and artificial sweeteners . . . and from Rosie: • how to get kids involved—from skinning almonds to layering lasagna • ways to have fun in the kitchen—creating scallion firecrackers and radish rosettes • low-fat and nondairy alternatives for those with special concerns • smart menu planning—letting the seasons be your guide . . . and lots more. This revolutionary book will change forever the way you cook for yourself and your family. With 58 photographs in full color.

When you’ve tried practically every diet and have struggled for years to reach and maintain a healthy weight, what do you do next? If you’re Heather and Terry Dubrow, MD, you create your own diet based on cutting-edge and Nobel–prize winning science that promises not just unprecedented metabolic control, but also an internal cellular rejuvenation with powerful antiaging effects. Then, after creating a diet that can transform your life from the inside out, you want to help as many people as possible look and feel their best, so you write a book about it! In The Dubrow Diet, Orange County’s favorite reality TV couple share the diet and exercise plan they created to end their own decades-long yo-yo dieting and flip on what they call the “ageless switch.” The central concept is called interval eating, a practice based on research showing that when you eat is perhaps the most important factor in weight loss and weight control. With interval eating, the Dubrows will introduce you to a simple eating schedule that can help you: ● reprogram your cells to go after stored fat for fuel. ● lower insulin and normalize blood sugar. ● fight off chronic inflammation linked to almost every major disease. ● activate a process known as autophagy, your cells’ self-cleaning process and an antiaging game changer. ● increase your energy. ● finally reach your goal weight. ● rejuvenate your skin and overall appearance. So, what are you waiting for? You have more power than you realize over the hormones that regulate your weight and the molecular factors that determine how you age. It’s time to take advantage of this power with a diet that is not only doable but also sustainable and even fun! The Dubrows wouldn’t have it any other way.
