Nurses today have very different lives and training from those who embarked upon this career 40 years ago. This is this is an account of the three years training of a nurse set in a London hospital in the 1960s. It is the story of one initially naive student nurse and her colleagues, as they progress from their first days as the junior girls, to the day when they eventually hold the letters of professional competence in their hands. In order to arrive at this senior status, they experience many highs and lows, from the day of their arrival onto their first wards, where they are faced with the often, terrifying domination of the ward sisters; we then walk with them through the partings of the ways and the reunions, as they are split up and seconded to other branches of the hospital. Throughout the three years, we get to know of not just the hard work and discipline, but also of their friendships, laughter, and tears. Nurses in training today, will be surprised at the sometimes dreadfully outdated and old -fashioned lives which these 1960s nurses, seem to live, but they will no doubt be charmed and fascinated too, by this really lovely story which is not so much about medical procedures and practices but is as much about the lives of those young girls who chose to leave home and live their lives in this way.

“WASPS” SYNOPSIS Traffic wardens in the UK have been given the nickname “Wasps” because of the black and yellow uniform that they wear. They were given more and more of the duties that were once done by police officers so that there is now no love lost between the two. We see another day begin in the office of some big-city wardens as the cleaner goes round grumbling at the mess left. A young girl arrives who is a new warden on her first day out from Training School. One by one the others arrive : Freda, the German who keeps to herself, Maggie who sorts everyone out, Mooney a mad-as-a-hatter part-time comedienne, Belle who spends her time fixing her make-up just in case she “pulls”, Octavia the well-spoken one who used to be a small-time opera singer and finally Pearl, the really odd one who seldom says a word but puts all her emotions into caring for her beloved feral pigeons. Sue is put through a comic initiation ceremony to show her what the public are really like before she goes out with each warden in turn and sees their different ways of doing or not doing the job. In the second act they assemble for lunch before being told to stay in for the afternoon as the powers that be have decided to interview them all for the position of Senior Warden. While they wait they decide to hold an impromptu birthday party for Pearl and they each manage to produce small presents for her. At the end of the play a present is found which has been left over and when Pearl opens the box she finds something inside that she didn’t want to find which throws her over the edge. “WASPS” SYNOPSIS Traffic wardens in the UK have been given the nickname “Wasps” because of the black and yellow uniform that they wear.
