Meet Centurion Gaius Hesperian; a reflective and compassionate member of Emperor Nero’s palace guard with a knack for detective work. (He’s considered rather odd by his fellow officers because he doesn’t torture witnesses.) When Odysseus Memnon, a Greek-Egyptian shipping magnate, is found murdered in his Alexandrian mansion after annoucing his conversion to an evangelistic cult to which he plans to donate all of his worldly goods, it's up to Gaius Hesperian to solve the crime.

Create the Christmas romance of your dreams, scene by scene, twist by charmingly predictable twist—each choice is yours. Slip on your favorite Christmas sweater, cozy up to a crackling fire, sip some spiced eggnog, and prepare to experience the ultimate holiday love story. But instead of watching it on some cheesy cable channel, open this book and put yourself in the director’s chair. First, decide your heroine’s problem. Was she just fired from her big city business job? Avoiding going home for Christmas? Or did she just realize the man who proposed to her maybe isn't Mr. Right? Then it's time to meet the man--should your heroine end up with the big city business exec, the small town hunk or someone totally unexpected (but still hunky)? Each choice will take you down a totally different path that all somehow end up making for a perfect made-for-TV romance. Will your Christmas activity montage include baking cookies, walking through a holiday festival, or skating on a picturesque frozen lake? Will you choose to include a generically bearded old man who perhaps could maybe be Santa Claus? Choice by hilarious choice, you’ll make your way closer and closer to the big payoff--the picture perfect, most romantic final kiss ever. And when you’ve savored that last bit of snowy, romantic goodness, don’t be glum. Turn back to page one and start a new love story. With hundreds of possible stories the happily-ever-afters never stop happening. Praise for Build Your Own Christmas Movie Romance “The choose-your-own-adventure-style parody features all the best tropes and treats of made-for-TV holiday specials.” —Chicago Reader “If you’re searching for the perfect gift for your Hallmark holiday film loving BFF (or just shopping for yourself, no shame), Riane Konc’s new book, Build Your Own Christmas Movie Romance, is the present you’ve been waiting for.” —Bustle

Skinny's Book of the Year, 2018 In 1990, Myles chose Rosie from a litter on the street, and their connection instantly made an indelible impact on the writer's way of being. Over the course of sixteen years together, Myles was devoted to the pit bull and their linked quality of life. And starting from the emptiness following Rosie's death, Afterglow launches a playful and incisive investigation into the mostly mutually beneficial, sometimes reprehensible power dynamics between pet and pet-owner. At the same time, it reimagines Myles's experiences with alcoholism and recovery, intimacy and mourning, celebrity and politics, spirituality and family history, while joyously transcending the parameters of memoir. Moving from an imaginary talk show where Rosie is interviewed by Myles's childhood puppet, to a critical reenactment of the night Rosie mated with another pit bull; from shimmering poetic transcriptions of video footage taken during their walks, to Rosie's final enlightened narration from the afterlife, this totally singular text combines elements of science fiction, screenplay, monologue, and lucid memory to get to the heart of how and why we dedicate our existence to our dogs.

'This is a story about what might happen when a woman takes charge... A glorious visceral mystery' The Times While on her daily walk with her dog in the woods near her home, Vesta comes across a chilling handwritten note. Her name was Magda. Nobody will ever know who killed her. It wasn't me. Here is her dead body. Shaky even on her best days, Vesta is also alone, and new to the area, having moved here after the death of her husband. Her brooding about the note grows quickly into a full-blown obsession: who was Magda and how did she meet her fate? From the Booker-shortlisted author of Eileen comes this razor-sharp, chilling and darkly hilarious novel about the stories we tell ourselves and how we strive to obscure the truth. __________________________ PRAISE FOR DEATH IN HER HANDS: 'Routinely hailed as one of the most exciting young American authors working today' Guardian 'A new kind of murder mystery' New Yorker 'Dark, devious' Observer 'A fine line between shocking realism and the absurd' New Statesman 'A brilliant off-kilter detective story' Evening Standard 'A beautiful novel' Sunday Times

This catalogue documents an exhibition at the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology on the mysterious ancient Egyptian jackal-headed gods associated with death and the afterlife. These gods are immediately identifiable symbols of ancient Egypt, but their specific identities and roles are often less well-known. Death Dogs is the first exhibition to examine their mysteries. The exhibition and catalogue focus on the three most important jackal gods: Anubis (embalmer and guide to the dead), Wepwawet (opener of the ways to the afterlife), and Duamutef (son of Horus, protector of the canopic jar). Jackal gods are represented by a variety of artifacts in the Kelsey Museum collection--statues, paintings, amulets, and other objects. These artifacts are used to examine the jackal gods and their functions in the wider context of ancient Egyptian religion and follow their changing roles into the Graeco-Roman period and beyond. The catalogue features 44 artifacts from the exhibition, some never before exhibited or published, many from University of Michigan excavations in Egypt, along with supplementary artifacts, archival photographs, vintage book illustrations, and explanatory graphics. Modern pop cultural manifestations of the Egyptian jackal gods are included to document their persistence into the present.
