Excerpt from Diseases of the Kidneys and Nervous System IN presenting this, the sixth and closing part of his work on Internal Medicine, the author does so real izing that although the field is already crowded with treatises upon this subject, yet the reception accorded the former numbers of this series has assured him that they have met a need. They have been prepared for the student and general practitioner, and not for the specialist. At this time the author desires to acknowl edge the many expressions of appreciation of the value of this series that have been accorded it. The author has endeavored to present the facts as he has observed them in his clinics, hospital and private practice, and as a result-oi this observation, the unproven have been omitted, and the verified and practical have been in corporated. For this reason the discussion of theories has been omitted, and for such the reader is referred to a cyclopedia treating of the subject. Special atten tion has been devoted to the subject of diagnosis, dif ferential diagnosis, hygienic and dietetic treatment, as well as the selection of the indicated remedy. Excerpt from On the Use of the Ophthalmoscope in Diseases of the Nervous System and of the Kidneys: Also in Certain Other General Disorders Some considerable parts of the present volume have already been published. I may refer more especially to my paper upon the 'Optic Nerves and Retinas of the Insane, ' which appeared in the volume of Transactions of the Medical and Chirurgical Society for 1868; to an article on Medical Ophthalmoscopy, which appeared in the number of the British and Foreign Medico-Chirurgical Review' for January, 1868;to some lectures on 'Optic Neuritis, ' which appeared in the Medical Times and Gazette between the 9th of May and theist of August, 1868, inclusive; and to some papers on the use of the Ophthalmoscope in tubercular meningitis and in spinal disease, which appeared in the Lancet of May 1st and May 8th, 1869, and of January 15th, 1870. Little or nothing, however, has been transferred to this book as it stood. I have found it necessary to revise the whole, and to re-write large portions, in order to add the results of more experience and to express maturer opinions. Thus a great part, the far greater part indeed of this volume, is now issued for the first time; and its pages might have been almost indefinitely multiplied had I thought it right to use all my accumulated material, and to publish a large number of cases. Excerpt from A Treatise on the Diseases of the Nervous System Diseases of the nervous system, like those of the heart, lungs, and larynx, require Special means of investigation and treatment. In no department of medical science has progress been more decided during the last decade than in that class of affections considered in this trea tise, and undoubtedly a great deal of the advancement is due to the instruments and apparatus by Which scientific research in this direction has become practicable. In the present chapter I propose to describe the instruments and apparatus employed in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the nervous system, and to explain the methods by Which they are used. Excerpt from Movable Kidney: A Cause of Insanity, Headache, Neurasthenia, Insomnia, Mental Failure and Other Disorders of the Nervous System; A Cause Also of Dilatation of the Stomach On October roth, 1905, ten days before the publishing of this book, I received from my book seller the latest edition of one of our most valuable works on Medicine,1 by Professor William Osler, Regius Professor of Medicine, Oxford University. Professor Osler gives only a very short resume on the subject of Movable Kidney. In this, however, are several statements which are SO diametrically opposed to the results of careful examination and treatment of world known gynaecologists in America, and the daily increasing interest taken in the subject that I propose to examine these statements and point out the errors in them. Under Symptoms of Movable Kidney,2 Professor Osler writes, In a large majority of cases there are no symptoms, and if detected accidentally it is well not to let the patient know of its presence.
