The die-cutting and tooling process is among the most critical areas of label converting and finishing. The sophisticated technology it uses enables the production of quality die-cut and converted labels and their application to multiple surfaces, using a wide variety of substrates, on many different presses. With a better understanding of this often overlooked discipline, you can improve production standards and significantly reduce costly downtime due to pressure-sensitive quality faults. This book explains the complex and vital role die-cutting and tooling plays. Through a series of detailed explanations, photographs, diagrams and charts, the author provides a detailed look at modern tooling technology - how the tools are manufactured, their use and applications, how they should be handled and stored. It includes a section on troubleshooting on the production line and a glossary of terms to ensure any unknown phrases are quickly understood within context. Label converters, industry suppliers and label buyers and all other professionals involved in label converting and finishing will find this book a valuable reference source that helps them run a more profitable business. Chapters include: The label printing and converting process Die-cutting of label webs to shape and size Optimizing the die-cutting process Special tooling for cutting, perforating, hole punching and slitting The nature, use and manufacture of embossing dies and cylinders The hot foiling process and the use and manufacture of foiling dies Cylinders, anvils, support rollers and magnetic cylinders Ancillary equipment for setting, measuring, testing, monitoring and adjusting tooling Inspecting, cleaning, handling, storage and safety considerations A guide to troubleshooting when using label dies and related tooling Glossary of die-cutting and tooling terminology

"The package printing industry is a vibrant and growing industry and digital printing technology is improving quickly--yet the adoption of digital printing has not fully penetrated the label printing market, a subset of packaging, and digital printing has seen slower adoption in its decade-long history in labels than expected. This research attempts to explain why this may be the case by understanding the factors affecting the intention to adopt digital printing. This study utilizes Fishbein and Ajzen's Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) in a cross-sectional survey of individuals in a decision-making role in label printing companies. The study was intended to gather timely, descriptive information to understand the adoption of digital printing for commercial production in the label printing industry in the next 12 months. The study attempts to measure a dependent variable, the Intention to adopt and the following independent variables: Attitude, Subjective Norm, and Perceived Behavioral Control. Questionnaire instruments were mailed to 260 companies, of which 51 responded, a response rate of nearly 19%, and of those, 31 qualified for data analysis. A high percentage (86%) of the respondents represented companies with fewer than 50 employees. The results of the research indicate that the outlook on digital printing technologies remains optimistic, however, those in charge of the adoption are concerned about budget within the next 12 months. The customer, sales, and marketing are the most influential groups supporting the adoption, contrasted with the president, and owners/shareholders with the most reserved view. The normative referents in the organization were shown to have the highest degree of influence and effect on Intention, illustrating the clarity of that construct in this specific research context. The discussion of the results covers three themes relevant to digital adoption in labels: budgetary concerns, customer-driven demands, and optimization of the production of sold goods."--Abstract.

In the ten years since the first ever Encyclopedia for the label producer and label user sectors was published it has become an established and well-respected international reference source, providing a comprehensive understanding of the technology and terminology for all kinds of label and product decoration solutions. It included materials, adhesives, printing methods, application technologies, inspection systems as well as the related areas of tickets and tags. It also covered legislative requirements and the growing area of brand protection and security as well as new innovations, including smart labels, RFID, indicator labels and chipless tags. Now these topics have been substantially updated and extended in the latest edition of the Encyclopedia to incorporate the production of narrow-to-mid-web package printing, the fast-changing world of digital imaging, printing and finishing, digital direct-to-shape and the new technologies of digital watermarking, mobile interactive labels and packaging, as well as the latest converting and tooling solutions and an understanding of printed sachets, pouches, flexible packaging and cartons. More information has been included on the environment and sustainability, and mention made of all the leading industry associations and relevant bodies. More informative, more relevant and more comprehensive, this new edition of the Encyclopedia should be a basic reference source for every label printer/converter and industry supplier - as well as for the designer, pack producer and brand owner looking to better understand label and related technology, markets and applications.

Unique in its integration of individual topics to achieve a full-system approach, this book addresses all the aspects essential for industrial inkjet printing. After an introduction listing the industrial printing techniques available, the text goes on to discuss individual topics, such as ink, printheads and substrates, followed by metrology techniques that are required for reliable systems. Three iteration cycles are then described, including the adaptation of the ink to the printhead, the optimization of the ink to the substrate and the integration of machine manufacturing, monitoring, and data handling, among others. Finally, the book summarizes a number of case studies and success stories from selected areas, including graphics, printed electronics, and 3D printing as well a list of ink suppliers, printhead manufacturers and integrators. Practical hints are included throughout for a direct hands-on experience. Invaluable for industrial users and academics, whether ink developers or mechanical engineers, and working in areas ranging from metrology to intellectual property.

Using Japanese paper on digitally printing photos can yield tremendous results for photographers who are interested in experimenting with new methods. But beware: The common concept of how photographs should look will be challenged if you decide to use this technique. Carl-Evert Jonsson shares his experiences using the experimental technique in this book. After using Japanese papers (washi) for paintings and collages, he started to use the papers for his photos. This technique is not an alternative to classic film-based photography. Ink is injected from a cartridge in a printer connected to a computer then the image is reproduced on printable washi paper. Darkroom facilities are not needed. All you need is a computer, printer, washi, and photos. The liveliness of washi fibres gives a softer result, and washi is more absorbent than Western papers, with the ink appearing integrated rather than sitting on the printed surface. Find out how to use a method that will give new life to photos with the insights in this unique photography book.

At present the textile industry produces the majority of its 34 billion square yards of printed textile fabric by screen printing. However as we move into the digital age developments in digital printing of paper are being adapted more and more for the textile market. Inkjet textile printing is growing while growth in analog textile printing remains stagnant. As digital print technologies improve offering faster production and larger cost-effective print runs, digital printing will grow to become the technology that provides the majority of the world’s printed textiles. This comprehensive introduction to the subject is broken into five sections. After two introductory chapters, it goes on to look in a number of detailed chapters at printer and print head technologies. The next section examines the printer software required for successful colour design and management. The digital printing colouration process is explored next, with chapters on substrate preparation, pigmented ink, aqueous inkjet ink, pre-treatment and printing on cationized cotton with reactive inks. The book is concluded with three chapters on the design and business aspect of digital printing.Digital printing of textiles contains fundamental technical explanations along with recent research, and is an invaluable guide for product developers, retailers, designers and academic researchers. Provides coverage of all the current developments in digital textile printing Covers important areas such as printer and print head technologies, printer software, digital printing colouration and design and business for digital printing
