There are two layers to this story, past and present. A middle-aged teacher reflects upon her life and the fantasies and obsessions which have led her to make some seriously wrong decisions. And yet those same wrong decisions have led her, against all the odds, to meet the love of her life. From different races and contrasting backgrounds, the couple embark upon a new, exciting life together, at the dawn of the new millennium. Little do they know that they are about to unravel the mysteries of a secret past and discover a family, of whose existence they were completely unaware.

Despite centuries of colonialism, Indigenous peoples still occupy parts of their ancestral homelands in what is now Eastern North Carolina—a patchwork quilt of forested swamps, sandy plains, and blackwater streams that spreads across the Coastal Plain between the Fall Line and the Atlantic Ocean. In these backwaters, Lumbees and other American Indians have adapted to a radically transformed world while maintaining vibrant cultures and powerful connections to land and water. Like many Indigenous communities worldwide, they continue to assert their rights to self-determination by resisting legacies of colonialism and the continued transformation of their homelands through pollution, unsustainable development, and climate change. Environmental scientist Ryan E. Emanuel, a member of the Lumbee tribe, shares stories from North Carolina about Indigenous survival and resilience in the face of radical environmental changes. Addressing issues from the loss of wetlands to the arrival of gas pipelines, these stories connect the dots between historic patterns of Indigenous oppression and present-day efforts to promote environmental justice and Indigenous rights on the swamp. Emanuel's scientific insight and deeply personal connections to his home blend together in a book that is both a heartfelt and an analytical call to acknowledge and protect sacred places.

Subject liaisons act as a bridge connecting academic departments to the library and its services, helping facilitate instruction sessions, research support, and collection development. To be at their best in these roles, subject liaisons need a working understanding of technical services functions. This book represents the first guide to speak directly to the needs and responsibilities of subject liaisons, clearing away unnecessary information and jargon to bring them up to speed on how technical services staff get things done. Clear and concise, this guide covers policy, budgets and funding, submitting orders, acquisitions ordering, processing, cataloging, deselection and weeding, and other major technical services duties; includes appropriate background information on each topic to enhance readers' understanding; provides "Questions You Should Be Asking" connected to each chapter which encourage subject liaisons to be proactive in their learning; and offers a glossary of common technical services terms. Armed with this guide's targeted information, subject liaisons will be able to better position themselves to serve both instructors and the library effectively.

General Headquarters Liaison Regiment reported battlefield information straight to high level Intelligence and Operations Staff. This information consisted of everything a Commander needed to make decisions to win the battle. All commanders need to be aware of up to date and accurate information on what is happening on the frontline. GHQ Liaison Regiment gathered information by sending patrols and by communications intercept of units engaged in battle. This history tells the story of the background to the formation of 2 GHQ Liaison Regiment. The hard work of the unit has not completely been recognised by historians of the Second World War and perhaps this helps fill the gap in our knowledge. During the War the unit was greatly appreciated by all Allied unit in the Mediterranean and North West Europe campaigns. Without the service provided by the unit the Allies would have struggled to win the War.
