Sharing methods and orientations of the interpretive paradigm, the contributors to this book sharpen our understanding of the school's differentiating function. They analyze issues and clarify persistent contradictions in traditional studies of curriculum differentiation and tracking by examining schools and classrooms and describing the processes and contexts in which curriculum differentiation produces both its intended and unintended effects. Curriculum Differentiation focuses on student's creation of meaning from differentiated classroom ecperiences. It studies lower-track students, analyzes the experiences of students in alternative programs, and contrasts the experiences of honor students in two different schools. It also offers teachers' perspectives, and analyzes curriculum differentiation from a district or system perspective. The authors challenge notions that curriculum differentiation is a neutral, necessary response to individual differences, or that it has an adverse impact on students. Professional educators interested in understanding and improving the means by which high schools carry out the nearly impossible mandate of equitably distributing "humanized" knowledge while accommodating diversity will find this book an important resource.

A differentiated curriculum can provide the basis for discovering, serving, and nurturing academic talent across California's diverse student population. Differentiation provides tools to vary the curriculum or instruction so that students who have already mastered given material continue to progress and students who have a particular interest in an area can pursue it in greater depth or in a personalized way. Although aimed at gifted and talented youngsters, four principles of differentiation can be used to meet the needs of all students. These include acceleration, complexity, depth, and novelty. The responsibility for differentiation is one which all educators must share, at the classroom level and the school level. Educators must develop a new vision of excellence that depends on a fresh understanding of how the core curriculum can be differentiated to provide advanced learning opportunities. The education of the most able students, as with all students, is best developed in challenging contexts which shift the emphasis from the structure of the program to the quality of the curriculum. The core curriculum currently embodied in California's curriculum frameworks is often described as a "thinking curriculum" because it tries to engage students at all times in the search for meaning. In addition to differentiation at the classroom level, successful differentiation at the school level involves new service models, new roles for educators, shared resources, improved assessment practices, and ongoing staff development. Modern Curriculum for Gifted and Advanced Academic Students addresses the need for advanced curriculum design in an age of national standards and 21st-century learning innovations. The text and its authors work from the assumption that the most advanced learners need a qualitatively different design of learning experiences in order to develop their potential into outstanding achievement, answering the question, “How should we design learning experiences for our most advanced academic students in the foundational curriculum areas?” This book provides the most contemporary thinking about how to design in-depth courses of study in the foundational curriculum areas with a high degree of complexity and advanced content. The book includes chapters articulating specific design components like creative thinking, critical thinking, and authentic research, but also subject-specific chapters in mathematics, language arts, science, and social studies to demonstrate application of those design components.
