Osprey's examination of the Dieppe raid of August 1942, which was one of the most controversial actions of World War II (1939-1945). Operation 'Jubilee' was a frontal assault on a fortified port landing the latest equipment and armour directly on to the beach. The main force would destroy the port facilities while other smaller landings dealt with anti-aircraft and coastal batteries. The raid itself turned into a fiasco. The assault force was pinned down on the beach and three quarters of the 5,000 troops landed were lost. This book analyses the disastrous raid and examines contrasting conclusions drawn by the Allies and the Germans.

In the tradition of Ben Macintyre, Tim Cook, and other bestselling World War Two historians, a riveting and updated telling of the tragic Dieppe raid of 1942. On the moonless night of August 18th 1942 a flotilla pushes out into the flat water of the Channel. They are to seize the German-held port of Dieppe and hold it for at least twenty-four hours, showing the Soviets the Allies were serious about a second front and to get experience ahead of a full-scale invasion. But confidence turned to carnage with nearly two thirds of the attackers dead, wounded or captured. The raid - the Royal Air Force's biggest battle since 1940- was both a disaster and a milestone in the narrative of the war. It was cited as essential to D-Day, but the tragedy was all too predictable. Using first-hand testimony and highlighting recently declassified source material from archives across several countries, bestselling author Patrick Bishop's account of this doomed endeavour reveals the big picture and unearths telling details that fully bring Operation Jubilee to life for the first time.

From the coauthor of the #1 New York Times bestselling American Sniper comes a remarkable true story of heroism and sacrifice in World War II. In the darkest days of 1942, an Allied force set out to capture the Nazi-occupied French port of Dieppe. More than two years had passed since the British had been humiliated at Dunkirk, and nearly nine months since the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. The Germans held the continent in a death grip. Now, some six thousand British and Canadian troops were attempting to gain a foothold on Hitler's domain. Joining the crusaders were fifty hand-selected, specially-trained soldiers from a new commando unit. These were to be the first Americans to fight in Europe, and they would become known as the U.S. Army Rangers. The mission was doomed, but the bravery the Rangers displayed proved that Americans were every bit as tough as their allies and enemies. Drawn from firsthand accounts and historical documents, this is an unforgettable story of the forging of an American legacy that still endures today. “[A] carefully researched and brilliantly executed narrative of the modern Rangers’ baptism in blood.”—America in WWII

My manuscript is a historical fiction novel. The story line follows a young Minnesota farm boy into the army after the outbreak of the war. It follows him through basic training, jump school, and then on into the war. The book covers the Normandy Invasionthe battle known as The Bridgeto far up into Holland and finally, the Battle of the Bulge. Throughout the book, I take the reader back to Minnesota so they may see how war affects family and friends on the home front. All the characters are fictional. However, all the military bases in the US and Europe are factual. Each battle my characters are involved in are accurate by timeline and locations. Anyone who is a student of the war or readers who love this genre should appreciate those facts. However, as the novel is a fictional work, I have taken literary license to add drama and hold-your-breath scenes throughout the story.

This is a story of lost innocence, love, death, war, and a longing for justice that stretches the bounds of morality. It is a tale of family that is tested by twisted beliefs; beliefs that encompass a warriors heart and a priest's sense of justice.
