Die vielfältigen Aspekte der Sprache der Septugainta The language of the Septuagint is a complex field of research at the crossroads of Classics and Biblical studies. It is also a field in motion with a steady supply of new data - papyri, inscriptions - and a constant renewal of approaches. It may appear daunting to non-specialists, yet linguistic analysis is vital for textual interpretation of the Greek Bible. In the present volume 36 experts introduce various aspects of linguistic research on the Septuagint in a way that it is at once accessible and representative of the state of the art.

The Septuagint (the ancient Greek translation of Jewish sacred writings) is of great importance in the history of both Judaism and Christianity. The first translation of the books of the Hebrew Bible (plus additions) into the common language of the ancient Mediterranean world made the Jewish scriptures accessible to many outside Judaism. Not only did the Septuagint become Holy Writ to Greek speaking Jews but it was also the Bible of the early Christian communities: the scripture they cited and the textual foundation of the early Christian movement. Translated from Hebrew (and Aramaic) originals in the two centuries before Jesus, the Septuagint provides important information about the history of the text of the Bible. For centuries, scholars have looked to the Septuagint for information about the nature of the text and of how passages and specific words were understood. For students of the Bible, the New Testament in particular, the study of the Septuagint's influence is a vital part of the history of interpretation. But until now, the Septuagint has not been available to English readers in a modern and accurate translation. The New English Translation of the Septuagint fills this gap.

This volume discusses problems related to the vocabulary of the Septuagint, the Greek translation of the Hebrew Scriptures. The background of the words in Greek literature, their use in the translation, and their later reception in Jewish and Christian writings, including the New Testament, are studied on the basis of concrete examples. The discussion shows how religion and theology can affect the meaning and usage of words and how, conversely, the use of specific words can have an impact on the understanding and interpretation of Scripture.

Explore the opportunities and challenges of Septuagint studies Recent research into the Septuagint has revealed numerous examples of modifications of the meaning of the Hebrew text in the course of its translation into Greek. This collection of essays by one of the leading scholars on the Septuagint shows how complex the translation of individual books was, provides reasons for differences between the Hebrew and Greek Bibles, and paves the way for a theology of the Septuagint. Articles introduce the field of Septuagint studies, the problem of the Letter of Aristeas, and the Hellenistic environment and the hermeneutics of Hellenistic Judaism. Features: A methodological discussion of whether and how a theology of the Septuagint can be written Essays introducing the field of Septuagint studies and its Hellenistic environment and the hermeneutics of Hellenistic Judaism Fifteen English and German essays covering twenty-five years of Septuagint research

Jennifer Dines provides an introductory survey of current scholarship on the Greek Bible - the Septuagint. She outlines its origins in the third to first centuries BCE, going on to trace its subsequent history to the fifth century CE. The Septuagint's relationship with the standard Hebrew text and its translational characteristics are examined, as is its value as a collection with its own literary and exegetical character. The Septuagint is shown to be an important source for biblical studies (both Old and New Testament), to make a distinctive contribution to the history of biblical interpretation, and to be of considerable interest for understanding the early development of both Judaism and Christianity.
