The Faculty of Mathematics and Geoinformation of the TU Wien has existed as such since the division of the early, very large Faculty of Technical Sciences in 2004. It provides its own study programmes in both subjects, as well as ensuring the mathematical and geometrical basic education of the students of all seven other faculties. The faculty also conducts research in broad and highly crucial focal areas. The current volume is part of a comprehensive commemorative series published in 2015 for the bicentennial memorial of the TU Wien providing information on the research activities, teaching tasks, and history of the Faculty of Mathematics and Geoinformation, in particular over the last 50 years. Special attention has been paid to the exceptional scientific achievements of faculty members.

A library was planned for the Polytechnic Institute from the very start, although the scale of the initial facility was quite small. Over the course of two hundred years, the University Library of the TU Wien has grown into Austria’s largest science and technology library. Today, the facility contributes to ensuring that the scientists and students of this modern research university are optimally supplied with literature for research and teaching, as well as being open to the general public. This volume attempts to present different aspects of the work and future challenges faced by this modern scientific library, as well as highlighting the diverse paths that libraries in general, and the TU Wien Library in particular, have followed over the past decades.

This volume takes a look at the past – at the last 50 years in particular – and a look at the present, painting a picture of how the Imperial Royal Polytechnic Institute, founded in 1815, became the Technische Universität Wien – the "TU Wien" – with the launch of the 1975 University Organisation Act, and has increasingly developed into a research university ever since. Contemporaries from the years when the TU Wien was still the TH in Vienna have a place to tell their stories in this volume, alongside articles on interfaculty research facilities and service centres that support research activities and transfer of research results in accordance with the TU Wien's motto, “Technology for people”. One of the main goals of this book is to not only inform readers, but also to amuse them a bit as they peruse the pages of the volume.

The book promotes an interdisciplinary approach to maintenance, through the presentation of practical and theoretical research in the field of electrical, civil, and mechanical engineering. The goal is to raise the level of maintenance knowledge, taking into account the continuous advancement of engineering and technology in all spheres of economy, infrastructure, and public services. This book contains papers presented at the 31st International Conference on Organization and Technology of Maintenance (OTO 2022), held at Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Information Technology Osijek, on December 12, 2022. The book brings 19 original papers written by authors from seven countries that underwent a blind review process by international review board members. The conference covers various topics like maintenance in technical systems, reliability of technical systems, design for maintainability, maintenance in agriculture, maintenance of machine elements, maintenance in the power systems, design optimization for maintenance, influence of maintenance on the environment, employee safety, maintenance and artificial intelligence, maintenance, and the new product design. The papers presented in the book reflect the current state of approach to maintenance as an interdisciplinary field. The OTO conference proved itself as an ideal opportunity for communication between scientists and experts in maintenance practice with the aim to raise the level of expertise and introduce new methods and maintenance procedures into everyday practice.

The history of the Faculty of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering is as old as that of the TU Wien. As intended by its founders, the former Imperial Royal Polytechnic Institute worked closely together with industry and business, addressing topics from the very beginning that one would today assign to the Faculty of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. In correspondence with overall technological progress, the research topics and teaching fields of the faculty have undergone continual, often even revolutionary, development and change. This commemorative volume provides both a historical overview of the evolution of the faculty as well as exemplary highlights and striking characteristics of the developments of the last 50 years in particular.

Cold formed structural members are being used more widely in routine structural design as the world steel industry moves from the production of hot-rolled section and plate to coil and strip, often with galvanised and/or painted coatings. Steel in this form is more easily delivered from the steel mill to the manufacturing plant where it is usually cold-rolled into open and closed section members. This book not only summarises the research performed to date on cold form tubluar members and connections but also compares design rules in various standards and provides practical design examples.
