Excerpt from A Dictionary of the Military Science My object in compiling the present volume has not been with the view of depreciating or detracting from the merits of the valuable Military Works already before the Public, but rather to offer a more simple mode of reference on those subjects which are of immediate Regimental utility. Many years have elapsed since the latest editions of Military Dictionaries have been given to the World, and in consequence of the almost total change which has taken place in every branch of our Military System, those works, while possessing much valuable information, have in a great degree become obsolete. The necessity therefore of a Publication embracing the substance of the latest Regulations, and containing the points most essential for the instruction of Young Officers will be apparent to every person conversant with Military Affairs. Aware of the difficulty with which Officers have to contend, in seeking for information from books which are too numerous and expensive to be in general possession, and of the inconvenience arising from their voluminous size, I have studied to condense into a portable form the explanation of those terms which have been selected as really useful.
