On an unusually warm day in November, in the middle of a college campus, a young man is struck with a crazy urge to take off his clothes. Paul, a student at the college, has become manically obsessed with a philosophy paper he has written, and decides that he must return to innocence in full view of his girlfriend’s office building. Soon he finds a crowd of onlookers gawking at him, and is apprehended by the campus police. They don’t realize he’s having a nervous breakdown, or that he hasn’t slept in ten days. What follows are humorous episodes of Paul’s bouts with madness, and his deep philosophical conflicts. His affair with an older woman sets up a forbidden love triangle that eventually drives Paul over the edge, and lands him in a mental hospital. He experiences many strange and funny episodes in the hospital, until he returns to sanity, and goes back home.

"In the vast literature of love, The Seducer's Diary is an intricate curiosity--a feverishly intellectual attempt to reconstruct an erotic failure as a pedagogic success, a wound masked as a boast," observes John Updike in his foreword to Søren Kierkegaard's narrative. This work, a chapter from Kierkegaard's first major volume, Either/Or, springs from his relationship with his fiancée, Regine Olsen. Kierkegaard fell in love with the young woman, ten years his junior, proposed to her, but then broke off their engagement a year later. This event affected Kierkegaard profoundly. Olsen became a muse for him, and a flood of volumes resulted. His attempt to set right, in writing, what he feels was a mistake in his relationship with Olsen taught him the secret of "indirect communication." The Seducer's Diary, then, becomes Kierkegaard's attempt to portray himself as a scoundrel and thus make their break easier for her. Matters of marriage, the ethical versus the aesthetic, dread, and, increasingly, the severities of Christianity are pondered by Kierkegaard in this intense work.

This poetry book talks about Nature in a way that rejuvenates the feelings of love we had in our youth. The paintings portray the world as romantic and inspiring. Rarely has word and image combined to create beauty in a world where beauty is so desperately lacking. The paintings and poems are not directly related, but one can analyze the two particularly stylistically and draw various interpretations. I leave this to the observer as each will have his or her own conclusions. Illusionism is primarily the work of the imagination, and no two readers will have the same observations.

One of the elements that many readers admire in Kierkegaard’s skill as a writer is his ability to create different voices and perspectives in his works. Instead of unilaterally presenting clear-cut doctrines and theses, he confronts the reader with a range of personalities and figures who all espouse different views. One important aspect of this play of perspectives is Kierkegaard’s controversial use of pseudonyms. The present volume is dedicated to exploring the different pseudonyms and authorial voices in Kierkegaard’s writing. The articles featured here try to explore each pseudonymous author as a literary figure and to explain what kind of a person is at issue in each of the pseudonymous works. The hope is that by taking seriously each of these figures as individuals, we will be able to gain new insights into the texts which they are ostensibly responsible for.
