Diamond films grown by activated chemical vapor deposition have superlative thermal, mechanical, optical, and electronic properties combined with a very high degree of chemical inertness to most environments. These properties, together with the ability to fabricate films and shapes of considerable size, promise an exciting new material with many applications. Some applications are on the verge of commercialization but many await a few more technological developments. Diamond-like films are already employed in both commercial and military applications. The popular press, as well as the scientific and technological and industrial communities, are increasingly interested in the potential for future development of these materials. Although there are many technical papers and review articles published, there is no Single comprehensive introduction to these technologies. The Scientific Affairs Division of NATO recognized the need and the future importance of these technologies and authorized an Advanced Study Institute on diamond and diamond-like films. NATO Advanced Study Institutes are high level teaching activities at which a carefully defined subject is presented in a systematic and coherently structured program. The subject is treated in considerable depth by lecturers eminent in their fields and of international standing. The presentations are made to students who are scientists in the field or who possess an advanced general scientific background.

Diamond's supreme properties can be realized by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of diamond films with many applications, such as cutting tools, tweeter diaphragms, deep ultraviolet light-emitting diodes, radomes, CPU transistors, quantum computer, and MEMs. This volume provides extensive reviews on various CVD methods with examples. Meanwhile, there are other forms of carbon coatings, including diamond-like carbon, carbon nanotubes, and graphene. These carbon coatings possess properties derived from diamond. For example, graphene is actually flattened diamond’s (111) face with superb electrical and thermal conductivities. For the first time, this book reveals a catalytic method to grow single-crystal graphene, whose applications are expected in heat spreaders, battery electrodes, interconnected circuits, and 6G antennae.

This book chronicles the proceedings of the International Symposium on Adhesion Measurement of Films and Coatings, held in Boston. The articles in this book were previously published in three special issues of the Journal of Adhesion Science and Technology. Films and coatings are used for a variety of purposes and their adequate adhesion to the underlying substrates is of cardinal importance from practical consideration. In the last two decades there has been brisk activity in devising new ways to measure adhesion or ameliorating the existing techniques.

The surface of materials is routinely exposed to various environmental influences. Surface modification presents a technological challenge for material scientists, physicists, and engineers, particularly when those surfaces are subjected to function within human body environment. This book provides a comprehensive coverage of the major issues and topics dealing with interaction of soft living matter with the surface of implants. Fundamental scientific concepts are embedded through experimental data and a broad range of case studies. First chapters cover the basics on biocompatibility of many different thin films of metals, alloys, ceramics, hydrogels, and polymers, following with case studies dealing with orthopedic and dental coatings. Next, a novel and low-cost coating deposition technique capable of production of several types of nanostructures is introduced through simple calculations and several illustrations. Moreover, chapter 6 and 7 present important topics on surface treatment of polymers, which is a subject that has seen many developments over the past decade. The last chapters target mainly the applications of coatings in biology such as in bio-sensing, neuroscience, and cancer detection. With several illustrations, micrographs, and case studies along with suitable references in each chapter, this book will be essential for graduate students and researchers in the multidisciplinary field of bio-coatings.

This book is a review of the science and technology of the element carbon and its allotropes: graphite, diamond and the fullerenes. This field has expanded greatly in the last three decades stimulated by many major discoveries such as carbon fibers, low-pressure diamond, and the fullerenes. The need for such a book has been felt for some time. These carbon materials are very different in structure and properties. Some are very old (charcoal), others brand new (the fullerenes). They have different applications and markets and are produced by different segments of the industry.Few studies are available that attempt to review the entire field of carbon as a whole discipline. Moreover these studies were written several decades ago and a generally outdated since the development of the technology is moving very rapidly and scope of applications is constantly expanding and reaching into new fields such as aerospace, automotive, semiconductors, optics, and electronics. In this book the author provides a valuable, up-to-date account of both the newer and traditional forms of carbon, both naturally occurring and man-made. This volume will be a valuable resource for both specialists in, and occasional users of carbon materials.
