The Alphabet Book + More, is a delightful, multi-sensory resource to help children learn about the alphabet and many more early literacy skills. It is packed with engaging illustrations, information about early literacy and lots of ideas for helping children to develop the skills they need to become proficient readers. Two songs are included to help reinforce learning. Advice is given on how the book can be used to teach a range of early literacy skills. Some early skills are identified. There is a section included which explains how children learn to read. Also highlighted is the role that music may play in early literacy skill development. Musical score is provided. An additional section explains long and short vowel sounds and provides further activities to help children to learn to recognise the letter shapes and to blend the sounds within words. Each letter is illustrated in upper and lower case, showing its position upon a line and the starting point and direction in which it should be written. Children can be encouraged to follow the direction of the arrow with their finger as the book is read. Alongside each letter are three words which start with the initial letter sound and a picture to illustrate each word. Each individual picture is a unique watercolour, lovingly created by the illustrator. The simple words are ideal as first words for children to read. Children will soon learn that pictures may be represented by text and learn to match the words and pictures. The rhyme on each page can be used to reinforce the letter sound and helps children to learn to recognise rhyming words. Children can be encouraged to sound out each letter and then include it in the accompanying rhyme/song. The syllables in each word are indicated by the dots beneath. Children may be encouraged to clap out the syllables in the words in order to help them to listen for the 'chunks' of sounds within them.
