Recently, a semiempirical method for alloys based on equivalent crystal theory was introduced. The method successfully predicts the concentration dependence of the heat of formation and lattice parameter of binary alloys. A study of the parameters of the method is presented, along with new results for (gamma)Fe-Pd and (gamma)Fe-Ni alloys. A new method is introduced for determining the electrical and mechanical parameters of large samples of materials in situ. A set of linear electrodes in boreholes forms a square pattern; positive and negative electrical potentials on alternate electrodes create symmetry planes which define several 'cells'; a given fraction of electric current leaves an electrode and reaches a corresponding electrode. It is thus possible to obtain an impedance characteristic for each cell. The situation is basically two-dimensional, so a Schwarz-Christoffel transformation may be used followed with electrical calculations to obtain the conductivity and the permittivity of the cell material. The mechanical parameters of the cells are obtained in a similar manner. A mechanical disturbance is generated in the central borehole and the travel time to the other boreholes is measured along with the attenuation. The mechanical parameters are computed and correlated with the electrical parameters. (Author Modified Abstract).

Additive manufacturing (AM) is one of the manufacturing processes that warrants the attention of industrialists, researchers and scientists, because of its ability to produce materials with a complex shape without theoretical restrictions and with added functionalities. There are several advantages to employing additive manufacturing as the primary additive manufacturing process. However, there exist several challenges that need to be addressed systematically. A couple such issues are alloy design and process development. Traditionally alloys designed for conventional cast/powder metallurgical processes were fabricated using advanced AM processes. This is the wrong approach considering that the alloys should be coined based on the process characteristics and meta-stable nature of the process. Hence, we must focus on alloy design and development for AM that suits the AM processes. The AM processes, however, improve almost every day, either in terms of processing capabilities or processing conditions. Hence, the processing part warrants a section that is devoted to these advancements and innovations. Accordingly, the present Special Issue (book) focuses on two aspects of alloy development and process innovations. Here, 45 articles are presented covering different AM processes including selective laser melting, electron beam melting, laser cladding, direct metal laser sintering, ultrasonic consolidation, wire arc additive manufacturing, and hybrid manufacturing. I believe that this Special Issue bears is vital to the field of AM and will be a valuable addition.

The escalating cost of material testing in terms of money and time for critical components in some industry fields-such as aerospace, transportation, and military-increases the need for a an effective, fast, and cheap testing method that can efficiently estimate the structure's mechanical properties. This book introduces the use of modal analysis in a novel approach towards the identification of mechanical properties for metallic components. Modal analysis has been known as an efficient technique in predicting the dynamic parameters of metal structures. In this book, an extensive investigation to find a relationship between the mechanical properties and dynamic parameters of metallic elements is described. Part of the book is devoted to predicting the effects of heat treatment of steel and ductile cast iron by the means of dynamic testing. A simple application of labVIEW programming software for the automation of the identification process is described.
