Excerpt from What Is the Destiny of Canada? Eight men of every ten in the United States, who have thought upon the subject, have reached the con elusion that Canada ought to belong to that country. This decision has not been reached by an elaborate process of reasoning, nor by a mature consideration of the consequences of such an event. The general belief that the United States comprises nearly all that is worth having on the continent makes it easy for the average American to jump to the conclusion that what remains ought to be included within the Union. \vith out realizing the magnitude of the country to the north, or making any estimate of its possibilities, the general conclusion is that its addition to the United States would not disturb or imperil the existing system. A more careful study of the matter might lead to a different conclusion but, in view of the feeling which now prevails, the eventual acquisition of Canada as a National policy would be approved by an immense majority. Excerpt from The Political Destiny of Canada I have reason to believe that some persons would like to have the Essay on the Political Destiny of Canada, which forms the principal part of this volume, and which is reprinted from the Fortnightly Review, in a more convenient form than a back number of the periodical in which it appeared. I take the opportunity of replying to some criticisms of Sir Francis Hincks. Sir Francis allows me to insert his paper, so that, if there is any poison in my Opinions, the antidote will be found beside the bane. Excerpt from Canadian History Notes The object of this little book is to awaken an interest in Canadian History to give the boys and girls of our schools a simple yet definite statement of the cause, incident and result of the impor tant events of the history of their own land; to lead them to see the steps by which Canada rose to her present proud position to see the struggle which won each of our great privileges of self government and the defects which each privilege remedied to lead them to honor and imitate the noble men and women who gave their time, their talents and their lives to work out the destiny of Canada - men whose lives teach us that Canada. Will become what her sons make her. At the same time it is hoped that the little work will be. A boon to teachers who are burdened with the many subjects of the school curriculum and the thousand interests of the school room. The two simple little sketches give a bird's-eye view of the whole period, refer to topics which are discussed in the book, and proceeding from the general to the particular, they arouse curiosity while they engender a spirit of research. Excerpt from With Wolfe in Canada: Or, the Winning of a Continent IN the present volume I have endeavored to give the details of the principal events in a struggle whose import ance can hardly be overrated. At its commencement the English occupied a mere patch of land on the eastern sea board of America, hemmed in on all sides by the French, who occupied not only Canada in the north and Louisiana in the south, but possessed a chain of posts connecting them, so cutting off the English from all access to the vast countries of the west. On the issues of that struggle depended not only the destiny of Canada, but of the whole of North America and. Excerpt from The History of the Dominion of Canada The subject of Canadian history has been usually treated in the textbooks authorized in elementary and secondary schools from a Provincial rather than a Dominion standpoint. Such works at best do not meet our present need, as they necessarily fail to give adequate recognition to all sections of the country, and as they often contain exaggerated notions of provincial matters. It was thought by many teachers that this mode of treatment should be changed and a wider view presented of the history and consolidation of the Dominion. In 1889 the Quebec Provincial Association of Teachers discussed the feasibility of preparing a history of Canada with this object in view, and in the following year the Teachers' Associations of Ontario, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia, also considered the same subject. In July, 1891, representatives of the different provinces met at the Education Department in Toronto, for a further consideration of the question. Nevertheless, it was not until July, 1892, at the meeting of the Dominion Educational Association in Montreal, that a scheme was formulated for the preparation of a text-book by competition, and a committee was appointed to examine such manuscripts as might be offered. Excerpt from Canada's Century; Progress and Resources of the Great Dominion: Notes, With Snapshots and Other Illustrations of an Extensive Truth in British North America Canada has advanced by rapid strides in the last decade. This is the result of the development of her great resources in agriculture, mines, forests, fisheries and manufactures, and especially of the Opening up of the country by railways and waterways, which have rendered the uttermost parts of the Dominion more accessible than they were before, and have provided means for disposing of the produce and manufactures of the different Provinces. In addition to the Canadian Pacific Railway, there are two other transcontinental railways in course of construction, besides shorter lines too numerous to mention. It seems to be the destiny of Canada to continue along the path of progress for many decades - one might almost say centuries.
