Catholics are born with tainted souls besmirched by a strange unspecified thing called original sin. Buddhists see all of life as suffering. The spirit is dragged through life enduring a seeming endless series of indignities occasionally supplanted by temporary short lived delusions of love, joy and possibly even happiness. But inevitably the indignities return relentlessly wearing the spirit thinner and thinner until it is incapable of having or containing even the most simple the short of delusions. These poems will take you on a tour of the painful indignities and delightful delusions.

This volume examines early Jewish and Christian imagery to demonstrate that the most probable interpretation of Christ's descent in Ephesians 4:9-10 refers to the descent of the Spirit at Pentecost subsequent to the ascent mentioned in Ephesians 4:8. The central portion of the book deals with the ascent-descent imagery associating Ps. 68:19 with Moses as found in Targum Psalms, the rabbinic literature, and other early sources. The section dealing with rabbinic interpretations of Ps. 68:19 is of particular importance demonstrating an approach for dating elements found in the later rabbinic tradition. The theological innovation of the author of Ephesians in identifying the ascended Christ as the Spirit who descended at Pentecost is highlighted as the best explanation of this difficult passage.

In an attempt to understand the growing popularity and influence of Christian fundamentalism, sociologist and documentary filmmaker James Ault spent three years inside the world of a Massachusetts fundamentalist church.Spirit and Flesh takes us into worship services, home Bible studies, youth events, men’s prayer breakfasts, and bitter conflicts leading to a church split. The Christian Gospels give two widely differing genealogies for Jesus, which have baffled theologians throughout the centuries. Not only are these genealogies irreconcilable, but the stories of the two accounts of the birth of Jesus, as given by Matthew and Luke, are also radically different. How can we account for this? An ancient tradition tells that there were two children named Jesus, a year apart in age and both born to parents named Mary and Joseph. These two children, brought up in close proximity, eventually "united" in a mysterious way, resulting in a single "Jesus" destined to grow up and fulfill the prophecies of the Old Testament. In grappling with this mystery, Nesfield-Cookson uses all available sources--biblical accounts, Christian apocryphal writings, Aramaic and Hebrew documents discovered in the Qumran caves in the twentieth century (the "Dead Sea Scrolls"), writings by Syrian theologians of the thirteenth century, and, in particular, statements by Rudolf Steiner, the first modern thinker--to speak of the existence of two Jesus children. The author also refers to the many works of art--largely by Italian artists of the Renaissance period--which appear to depict two Jesus children. Fifteen of these paintings are reproduced as beautiful, full-color plates. The author also develops a parallel theme regarding the mystery of Christ and Jesus--the gradual descent of Christ (the Spirit of the Sun) from the spiritual world into the physical body of Jesus.

Dr Parke’s monograph examines how Fijians, especially in western areas of Fiji, currently understand and explain the origins and development of the social and political divisions of late pre-colonial traditional Fijian society. It assesses the reasoning, consistency and, where possible, the historical accuracy of such understandings. The oral history research which forms the backbone of the study was conducted in either standard Fijian or one or other of the western Fijian dialects with which Dr Parke was familiar. The period on which the monograph concentrates is the two centuries or so immediately prior to the Deed of Cession on 10 October 1874. A number of the major chiefs of Fiji had offered to cede Fiji to Queen Victoria; and after the offer had been accepted, Fiji became a British Crown Colony on that day. The volume will be of interest to all archaeologists, anthropologists and historians with an interest in Fiji. It will also be of wider interest to Pacific Studies scholars and those of British colonial history as well as historians with a wider interest in indigenous traditional histories and their role in governance today.
