James Bingham of Kilmore Parish, County Down, Northern Ireland (Ulster). James was born in 1732 to Thomas Bingham and Elizabeth Hay. In 1753, he married Ann Cleland of Kilmore. Four of their children emigrated from Ireland to North Carolina ca. 1785. They were William, Robert, Mary (Shaw) and Thomas. Rev. William Bingham (1754-1826) became a Presbyterian minister and founded the Bingham School of North Carolina in 1793. The school continued until the 1920's, and had three generations of Bingham headmasters. After living in Guilford County, North Carolina for a few years, Thomas Bingham (1769-1854) moved to the Lebanon area of Wilson County, Tennessee and established a large family there. Later descendants also lived in Arkansas, California, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, North Carolina, Alabama, Washington D.C. and elsewhere.

Later in 1799, Jonas moved with parents to Logan Co., Kentucky. He married Melinda Butler ca. 1801 in Maury Co., Tennessee. They were the parents of three sons. Thomas Bingham, progenitor of his line of the Bingham family in North America, was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England in 1642, and migrated to Connecticut Colony between 1652 and 1659 with his mother, Anne Fenton Bingham. Thomas was the youngest son of Thomas, Sr. and his second wife, Anne Fenton. On December 12, 1666, at age 24, Thomas married Mary Rudd, who was 17. Mary was probably a daughter of Jonathan Rudd and Mary Metcalf. After living 33 years in Norwich, Thomas moved his family to the newly settled town of Windham, Connecticut. Children of Thomas and Mary were: Jonathan, Ann, Abigail, Nathaniel, Deborah, Samuel, Joseph and Stephen. Mary died in 1726, age 77. Thomas died in January 1730 at age 88. Both are buried in Windham Center Cemetery. Descendants lived in Arizona, Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Vermont, and elsewhere.
