Originally published in 1986, Dependency and Interdependency in Old Age presents papers from the British Society of Gerontology annual conference in 1985. The areas covered include: the sociology of ageing, methodological issues, evaluations of service provision, ethnographies of growing old, historical studies and political perspectives on ageing. A creative dialogue between the proponents of these themes was urgently needed at the time and it was hoped that this volume would stimulate such a discussion.

Psychologists have contributed to the understanding of dependency in older age by describing and explaining the functionality of dependency across the life-span. Psychological research has also examined variables (such as the responses of carers to the dependent behaviours of older people) that exacerbate dependent feelings and behaviours (Baltes, 1996), but it has not included an individual difference measure of interpersonal dependency. According to Rosowsky, Dougherty, Johnson and Gurian (1997), an understanding of the ways that personality style affects older adults' engagement and reception of health services would assist providers in planning treatments and services that are more cost effective and attuned to individuals' needs. This research, therefore, developed a measure of interpersonal dependency for use with older adults and evaluated it in a home- care service setting. In addition it was found that both interpersonal dependency and depression were significant positive predictors of mobility in older adults.

As people age, they become less mobile, and social networking becomes more difficult to maintain. This book examines the support networks of the elderly and reaches the conclusion that 'older people do not engage in relationships on the basis of a one-sided dependency; rather relationships tend to be reciprocal or interdependent'. The authors offer a positive and realistic approach to the relationship between the elderly and society.

Dependency is conceptualized in terms of separate problems or age groups, focusing on finance. Each problem becomes the centre of political or gender debate. Beryl Day examines these approaches and argues that such fragmentation hinders the understanding of dependency and its place in society.
