Born out of a disastrous flood and one of the first large environmental protests in the US, the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area now provides a 70,000-acre connection to the natural world to four million visitors a year. This unit of the National Park Service preserves historical sites that predate English settlement in the New World and evidence of Native Americans going back 13,000 years. Established in 1965, Delaware Water Gap NRA also incorporates 40 miles of the Middle Delaware National and Scenic Recreation River, 28 miles of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, a state forest, and state wildlife management areas. Its many natural features include the highest waterfalls in two states, plus a geological feature once recognized as a scenic Wonder of the World. See why Condé Nast Traveler named the Delaware Water Gap the most beautiful place in Pennsylvania.

The Old Mine Road, considered the first road in America designed for wheeled vehicles, was built three hundred years ago by Dutch settlers for access to the mines of the Minisink country. It began in Kingston, New York, wove through Sussex and Warren counties in New Jersey, and ended near the Delaware Water Gap. Many changes have taken place in these regions since C. G. Hine recorded his observations and printed The Old Mine Road for his friends in 1908. Bulldozers have obliterated much of what he saw as he took his readers along the length of the road, describing the natural beauty of the countryside and relating the history and legends linked with the road and the people who lived on its route. This new printing is a facsimile of the first 1908 edition. Henry Charlton Beck's introduction gives a publishing history of the book and provides a biographical sketch about Hine.

Tracing the history of the Delaware, this book delves into archives and newspaper files to explore the men who tried to tame this wild river. Many attempted to venture down it in a variety of vehicles due to the needs of commerce, but in recent times it has been converted to leisure activities.
