The NATO Insensitive Munitions Information Center (NIMIC) has been established as a clearinghouse for information in insensitive munitions and munitions safety. The pilot facility is located at the Johns Hopkins Univ. Applied Physics Lab, Laurel, MD. The NIMIC focuses on technologies that can reduce inadvertent detonation during manufacture, storage, transportation, or deployment. The NIMIC receives information in the form of technical reports, meeting papers, monographs, journal articles etc., as well as specifications (materials, systems, and environments) and test techniques and procedures. Bibliographic information is extracted and entered into relational databases.

The Conference Proceedings contains the 23 papers and the Technical Evaluation Report presented at the Propulsion and Energetics Panel 78th A specialists' Meeting on 'Insensitive Munitions', which was held from 21st-23rd October 1991 in Bonn, Germany. The Specialists' Meeting was composed of the following sessions: Insensitive Munitions Policy (4); Explosives and Gun Propulsion (6); Rocket Propulsion (4) and Physical Phenomena Associated with Insensitive Munitions (9). The papers presented reflect the big progress made in understanding and characterizing the response of energetic materials to external stimuli such as shock, fire and bullet impact. Small scale testing results, statistical data and approaches to numerical modelling are reported. The need for deeper investigation of the mechanisms involved, for corroboration of the statistical results and for better fidelity criteria of small scale testing becomes apparent. The NATO Insensitive Munitions Information Center (NIMIC) recently established in Brussels is charged to provide more exchange of information and international cooperation. Munition safety, Sensitivity reduction, Reduced sensitivity munition, Safety design, Hazard reduction, Impact resistance, Safety specification and policy, Fire resistance, Munition survivability.

This workshop is the first of a series being organised by the NATO Insensitive Munitions Information Center (NIMIC) to promote the interchange of information among the participating nations of NIMIC on various technical subjects associated with the requirements, testing and assessment of insensitive munitions. The presentations and record of discussions made at this Workshop do not imply endorsement of the ideas, accuracy of facts presented or of any product by NIMIC or the Defence Departments of the NIMIC Participating Nations.
